    Buying seized Crf250r?

Hey guys.. there is a 2005 crf250r on Trade Me for 1000$ at the moment that is seized..
I am looking for a cheap bike because i dont feel comfortable on my 200exc.
Is it still going to be cheap after id say a full rebuild..
1.How much are all the parts going to be (estimate)
Just thought because we have a friend that is a qualified mechanic and has nothing to do anymore so dont have to pay shit all labor cost compared to shop.

One question springs to mind, does your friend the mechanic know he might be taking on this project :P

Though, I could find a use for a rolling frame, so if you get it and it turns out the seizing is worse than you thought, chuck it up on TM as a roller and I'll start the bidding at 500. (there is actually an 05 250x roller on for 1k atm)

if your close by go and see it with cash in hand offer him 700 and go from there once you have it shop on Ebay ive just done an 08 yzf250 in the states bought it for 750 and spent 600 on new bearing a low hr crank and cylinder new piston and rings and a new set of genuine valve. 2 months ago did a 09 kxf250 needed crank piston head and barrel all up cost 1700 including buying the bike as a wreck.

So pretty much if there isnt anything to serious i could walk away with a fresh bike but if serously damaged i could have a waste of time sitting in the shed and sell the frame hmmm

Tinkering in the shed with bikes sounds more like a 'whale of time' than a 'waste of time', just saying, it's a win win really

Be a bit careful, the seller is essentially saying "it doesn't go, I have no idea why" which means it's probably well and truly fucked, add in the fact that it's his son that seized it (ever seen a careful teenage rider?) and I would not touch it unless it's really cheap. Allow the cost of shipping it to wellsford ($400?) as well..... buy something closer to home!

I can understand your concern about the 200EXC, it's peaky but the powervalve is adjustable and can be set to give a soft hit. If the handling is concerning you get some help to set the suspension up correctly, maybe try the guys at Warkworth motorcycles? The EXC is a good handling bike, once you sort stuff out you will be hard pressed to find a better 200cc bike.

What kind of riding are you intending to do with your bike?
for woods type stuff I'd be persevering with your 200EXC, maybe look at a flywheel weight and possibly change the power valve springs if you can?

if you're doing jumps and mx type stuff then the CRF250 will be good, particularly for the jumps as it's very easy to gradually increment the throttle as you get braver. They're also much more forgiving if you choose a wrong gear or bad line etc. A 125 is harder for a start but teaches you better habits on the track.

If you are looking for the jump/mx suited bike and given you're looking at fixing up a broken one I am assuming your budget isn't huge, I would suggest you try and do a straight swap of your 200EXC for one with a good mech history/service record. As CRF250s are a dime a dozen and 200 EXC's not as common but more desirable by a specific crowd you should be able to swap for quite a decent and new 250. You should be aware that any race style bike tends to demand more of your attention and pocket money for servicing that the exc will.

Honestly given my experience with buying a fix up machine recently I would not recommend doing it with the thought that it will be cheaper as the information you get from the seller seems to be most likely incomplete. If you are mechanically mind and want something to tinker with then that's an entirely different matter, just make sure you ask about everything.

    A few questions
-do you know what's wrong with the CRF in regards to the seized engine?
    - have you done a costing to buy the parts required to fix said CRF?
-a running CRf is worth 3-4g if the parts & labour add up to more then 2g is it worth it?
-have you had the KTM's suspension sorted by a reputable techician eg Watson in Kumeu, Norm at Suspension Tech, Mark at Patterson & Oconnor etc
-you could always fit the KTM's motor in the CRF's chassis
-a good conversion is to fit a CR500 engine in the CRF chassis
Lots to think about and consisder .
