On second thoughts, maybe there should be a whole lot more people customizing classics.

The unmolested ones would become even more valuable.

I just happen to prefer classic bikes in their original form.
Doesn't worry me, I'm just happy to see a bike being enjoyed instead of stuck in a glass box.

Cool, enjoy your counting your hypothetical cash, the rest of us are off for a ride instead.

People get obsessed with std as some religious sect. Factory spec must be observed. Ok so maybe they always wanted one and that's their right.

But they can fucjk right off if they tell others what is right (unless it's plain crass). I'm building my resto how I want it. Someone else's version of history, but that someone is me! and I'm not looking at bikes as an investment.

Man, people on both sides of this argument get very excited

Me, I've got some old bikes and I just ride 'em.
Some are bog standard - R80g/s - and some are modified - Xt500 (better shocks and bars), and so on...

If I find one that needs work, I'd be tempted to do the modification thing (the XT needs more power!) and if it was mint (like the Beemer), it's gonna stay that way.

Darn right. I've never owned a bike that I have not modified in some form to suit myself, be it suspension, cosmetics, bars, mirrors etc etc to make it preform better, fit better or just look better (to ones own eye).

The factory product is always a compromise between economics and trying to universally fit all potential buyers.

It is nice to have a original museum piece or two however there are some obsessive people out there - I a while back about a US concourse car that the owner had established how each fucking bolt was strung up and painted so where he restored it he could replicate the angle and get the thicker paint build-up of the 'drip' factory correct. That's just friggen mental.

Me neither (at least, not for my profit - none of mine will be sold while I'm alive).

It will be nice to know though that eventually each one will return the most that could be expected of it, given what it is.

The Japanese classics are heading upward in $ value. Clean original spec Nortons fetch big $, Triumphs are still affordable.

It would be a bit of a gamble picking the next high flyer though. I'd had said some years back grab a first model GPZ900r - would have been a bad choice as an investment. You'd think a game changer like the first GSXR750 (86 I think) would be getting good coin, not really mind you can you find one?

H1 ZXR750 with the Hoover pipes. Step into Jellys garage and you might find what several people would call investments but you know they will be ridden at some stage.

That and R80: ten grand the pair. I'll bring the trailer up.

Bike EXIF is actually my favourite internet site. (Sorry Kb'ers - nah, not sorry)

And I would take an AC Sanctuary or Croz modded jap classic all day every day over a stocker. motorcycles are not investments for me (unless in the Ross Asset Management/Bernie Madoff/Bridgecorp/Hanover sense) so I want the custom one.

You can have the XT and the Gas Gas for that.

When he says Gas Gas he means two farts in a bottle.
