Mikuni Jets in NZ?

What's the deal with the ridiculously priced Mikuni Jets over here? I'm rejetting my smoker for chambers and I need several pairs of main jets and a few pairs of pilot jets. Everywhere I've called charges $10+ PER JET. That makes rejetting a two stroke a horrendously expensive task. They cost $3.50 each if ordered from the states. I'd rather buy them here for the convenience, but it looks like I'll have to wait for a couple of weeks to get them sent to me. Does anyone know of a source for genuine, reasonably priced main and pilot jets? Or does anyone have some spare that I could buy off them? Good old NZs horrible mark-ups strike again.

There's a guy on TM who does em for about 5$ per main. Also, if you wrote down what sizes you need others with spares might be more able to help out...

Oh, woops, I need mains from 140 - 200, and pilots from 25 - 30. I remember seeing cheap jets on TradeMe a few weeks back, but I don't think they were genuine Mikuni. There's nothing on TM at the moment though

Wouldn't be too concerned about the brand, they're just a thingo with a hole in it.

I'm putting chambers on my RD, and I have no idea what size mains/pilots I'll end up on, so I'll be starting rich and jetting down till she's running right. I may only end up going a few sizes up on the main, as they're street friendly chambers, but I'd rather not risk a holed piston. I've heard bad things about aftermarket jets, especially the ones that Keyster produce. If I recall correctly, jets/needles/needle jets are machined to a thousandth of a millimetre, so I'd rather save myself the trouble and just get genuine parts. I did inadvertently buy a Keyster kit once, and it was shit... the threads on the main jets weren't machined properly so I sent it back.

Well don't start at 200s, with double the hole area you'll risk washing all the lube out with fuel buildup (assuming that is still a thing on 2Ts).

What you could do is get cheaper jets for tuning, then just drop in some brand name ones once the size is sorted out. Or find a kit, that how I did my Bros (cost about 150 but includes needles too).

Accurate sizing is important for replication, you aren't building multiple bikes so don't worry.


If you want to keep it really cheap just drill out the jets with small drills to go richer and solder up and re drill smaller for leaner.
You can also use welding tip cleaners as a micro file to tune even finer.

This takes more time and care than having a good set of jets but will get a good result with a smart and patient approach.

Many will deride that approach as rough but I't worked vary well for me.

I must also mention I've never had to deal with a twin, only a single, still; shouldn't be too much of an issue.

ps Just read Kobas post, forgot that , you used to be able to get drill bits for that job ??

I gave up and just ordered them from EconomyCycle. In the end, the jets worked out to be 5 NZD per jet after the cost of shipping. They have great customer service. The last time I ordered a needle from them it got bent in the mail, so they sent a me a new one completely free of charge. Drilling jets out seems like much more hassle than it's worth in the end... When they do arrive, it'll be time to pop them chambers on! Nothing quite like a smoker on the pipe

On the topic of chambers, by some odd chance does anyone recognize these? I bought them off eBay for cheap, advertised for an RD400. Whatever they are, they're well made, but they have no markings other than an L or an R stamped onto each cone. But so far I haven't been able to ID them. They look like a mixture of old school pipes, like Bassani's or Spec II's...

Oh ok , Chambers bring them to life ,you'll be surprised !

At odd times over the years I've modified things that have really changed performance.
One of the first was about 1971 when I ported a T350 Suz. With ,if I remember correctly 4mm off different areas the bike became peaky and a little dissappointing when I first test rode it.
I fitted some old 250 chambers someone had given me and WOW!
Up the road on the first test, the thing kept jumping into the air !! Came alive,first 2 or 3 gears were amazing.

Watch how you jet, too lean and the piston top will pop a hole.

Thanks for the offer on the spare jets anyway roogaza! Can't wait to see how the chambers make it run. I measured them up and did the math, and I think they should start kicking in at about 5,000 and peak at 7,500, which is a pretty similar curve to the stock pipes. Even with the stock pipes it can really get up and go. It'll only just pop a little wheelie with an empty tank of gas in first gear, maybe the chambers will change that.

Of course you're going to get ripped off. This is NZ after all, where just about everything is very expensive. Order them from the USA, or wherever is cheapest.
