Yes. I shall remain dwelling in my non-Touratech-Approved-Rider-Gear Ghetto. Those of us without WINZ/Government/Susan Devoy-approved+supplied funding must do so... though we are, verily, cast out into the Approved-Gear-Less (TM) hinterlands, yet we shall still ride...!!!

I've got a Rukka suit (Jacket AND pants - I know!) that cost around $3k, and that was below list.

If you think that is expensive, try a couple of shocks: http://shop.touratech.co.nz/touratec...2010-2013.html

What a great thread this is. Is the op still present?
Still have a look at the thread now and then, I recently bought a YB7 in much better condition and 2/3rds of the price of the bike that prompted me to start the thread.

I found that ordering goods direct from Touratech Germany is still cheaper (even after taxes) then getting it from the NZ or Australian distributor ....
I've spent my money on bikes, booze and babes. The rest I've wasted....

Those shock prices are about what I'd have expected. Ohlins with remote reservoir and hydraulic preload for @2,800- ish is probably normal with our new miniature dollars.

The Rukka prices seem similar to BMW prices. A mere fraction of a Touratech ensemble.

When I got the Ohlins set (caught up with you on the last trip to service them), it was $5k for both ends (not inc install). I wonder who would service Touratech as well... the prices scare me away from even researching who OEM is etc

I have always thought that quality textile gear is as good as leather, and better when wet, in terms of protection. Unless I am misunderstanding the results of leather and textile gear being tested? Would be grateful if you can post appropriate links. Generally I ride in leather in summer, when it tends to stay dry, and textile in winter, when it frequently rains (in the lower North Island).

Off topic but a pair of Leather gloves don't last anywhere near as long on a belt sander compared to a $10 set of Kevlar gloves (that look like a pair of cotton gloves)

it was on PB about 20 years ago I tried the same test at work (because the guys thought they would be shit) The test was mute though as they wouldn't wear them as they weren't available in black.
I couldn't even cut them with a Stanley knife.
But they are way more abrasion resistant than leather..
They even wick moisture away, they have no fastenings though they would be awesome for under gloves in winter.
Supposedly the best off road riding gear is a Kevlar flak/bullet proof vest as they are made for blunt force trauma. But John Key won't let me buy one.
One of those might even have spared your collarbone?

Nah, armour that supported the shoulder may have helped.
Some years back a guy appeared here with a Kevlar suit of race "leathers" It immediately got dubbed the stretch and gro suit - for obvious reasons...
It was approved on a trial basis here - it was OK for AMA competition at the time from memory and a family member in the US had sourced it for him.
Use showed the one major fault - and for racing it's a biggie - when it hit the ground it "grabbed". Leather slides which is much less harmful. I'd think that Kevlar gloves would certainly have to have the metal/plastic inserts to allow them to slide on contact. Never seen another one like it anyway.
Probably a blind alley as far as the outer cover of a race suit goes anyway.
