Yip. Surprisingly agile and capable. Comfort is short lived, but that's to be expected. Exit grip is lacking, so ya have to ride it queer. But no more fucked up than a MotoGuzzi relative to a more main stream bike.

Considering the role of suspension is largely to keep the wheels in contact with the road, do you think a hardtail is a good concept for NZs roads?

True story. He is a nice old buffer from Oamaru and the two heavily tattooed wimmin advancing on him, one carrying a fence paling, both shouting obscenities scared shit out of him. Location rough street in Papanui.

Tell your colleague not to buy Chinese made as there's no parts backup and I hear of scooters given away for scrap cos they can't get a minor part...

You're implying it's not safe for the roads?

No bike is safe unless ridden apropriately. How is that different with a hard tail.?

Ahh, Drew's sage like safety tips.
Perhaps you can regale us with some anecdote about throttle use with the word both in it?
Don't you look at my accountant.

Yeah my lovely wife had one of those "Sunny 50" scooters as her first. Thing was a fuckin nightmare, spent every 2nd weekend fixing the damn thing.
On the day we moved in to our first home from our rental she was riding it across town, was waiting for her and thinking where the fuck is she, thing had given up half way there and she had to push it the rest of the way.
Went to Emoto and got a Piaggio Zip the next day (just what you need after buying a house). Thing has been brilliant, is assembled in China but designed in Italy, only time it has given us trouble was just as I was getting on a plane to aussie earlier this year, luckily got Askor on to it and he fixed the issue (blocked carb). Not bad for over 12000ks on a scooter with virtually no servicing. 2 strokes for the win.

I had the displeasure of doing a WOF road test a while ago on a hardtail chopper with a 300 tyre on it and an aggressive rake.

It actually scared me. I got to the end of the road and virtually had to paddle my feet along the road on either side just to get it around the corner. It was like I'd never ridden a bike before.

Did I think it was safe for our roads? Absolutely not.

Did it get a WOF? Yes it did. It was only a couple of years old, it ticked all the boxes on the WOF sheet and clearly someone saw fit to certify it for our roads a couple of years ago. (I wonder if anyone actually rode it before they signed off on it though).

You should report it to the authorities.

    Yeah right.

And have everyone who paid 50 grand plus for their custom chopper come gunning for the prick who was responsible for their bikes becoming ineligible for further registration.

    That sounds like fun.

I'm not giving safety tips. I'm saying as long as you ride the thing right, it's fine.

Mibbee you're the problem. I've seen plenty of people ride them just fine.

Yeah, the owner assured me that once you figure out how to ride them they're not so bad.

I can't see myself wanting to repeat the experience often enough to ever give me the opportunity of learning.

That you don't want to ride them is fine. Condemning them on the whole is just stupid.
