i thought it was a relatively normal figure for one of those with a few mods. Not sure why the smugness by all the experts.

Funny thing is manufacturers keep selling bigger hp bikes that dont seem to be much quicker. Must be some sort of hp blow off valve hidden on newer bikes. My theory is they shorten the wheelbase every year to make them seem to lift the front easier giving a false sense of bigger power.
Then there is the LAMS version bikes that they deflate the hp and bolt on some heavier cast iron cheep to produce bits and inflate the price instead.
Half the excluded bikes produced years ago are excluded because the manufacturer inflated the specs and weighed the bike so dry they had dehydrated.

ZXR400 is ok and CBR400 is not. Honda dyno and scales were different from Kawasaki versions is the most likely reason.

same size rear wheel as a honda cbx 6 made 30 years later so they must have been a weapon.

The opposite of the Japanese car market when they had the "Gentleman's agreement" not to produce are car exceeding 206kw. So suddenly every performance car out of Japan had exactly that figure. Dyno testing done by car tester proved a lot had more than that...

It also comes down to the engines, a lot of mass produced engines can have a fair amount of variance in their power output, especially the LAMS bikes which are built to a budget in a 3rd world nation.

Not the opposite - just the same. My understanding is that there was a 45PS limit on home market 400's. Some PS were bigger than others....

From what I've seen of the late LAMS stuff, because it's all made on automated plant, production tolerances are pretty good now wherever it's made.
British stuff from postwar to collapse though varied badly.
