I wonder if this is indicative of a trend? These used to be REALLY expensive. I remember one being sold a couple years back on tardme and the asking was north of $30k.

If you wanted one, thats the one to buy I would have thought (rigid mount motor, four speed trans, 34 hp and all!)

    I like that model Harley.

    I've noticed it with cars.
Its a reflection on demographics, and rose tinted specs to a degree.
Neither of these are now more than weekend bling but people who remember Vintage Cars are now a minority.
Toyota HiAces will be the next Kombi....but with houses being expensive and having less space for stuff, and lack of interest who knows.

There are VW split screen Kombis on TM for over 90K
Having owned/wrecked a few back in the day, I would not want to drive one with a split no syncro first reduction hub trans and a very gutless ( no spares available) 36 HP motor. As Iconic as they are pretty horrible to drive....especially over 80k

I remember when Ford Model A's were going for big money.
At 27K its pretty good buying if your a Waltons Fan....night Mary Ellen.

You're doing it wrong, trade up to a smaller house with a small industrial estate attached.

You can get way too "authentic" when it comes to vintage stuff, you forget how shit they originally were. And somehow "hotrods", like Harleys have devolved into a fashion fetish. A good old fashioned sleeper is always fun though.

    I'm aiming somewhere in between.

A friend of mine, no longer with us, worked in engine reconditioning. More than once he mentioned that the vintage car and bike enthusiasts cheaped out their restorations. They didn't want the job done properly they wanted it cheap. No shortcut too short.

Some do. Depends if they want a rider/driver or a display item. What pisses me off is the absolute originality fetishist who searches the world for original parts when he could have a runner indistinguishable from oe with a bit of lateral thinking. Spyda will know who/what I mean, lol.

Some upgrades are absolutely necessary too. Did a BMW Isetta engine a while back. Roller bearing big end conversions are available now for them - basically the 250 bike big end and rod - and if you want an Isetta to run in modern traffic it's a must have. The OE plain bush cannae take it captain....

I've got a 74 VW Singlecab thats been in the shed worked on for .....gasp 12 years. I was seeking perfection, now more a daily run around and someone else can seek perfection one day.
They are quite nice to drive, a world away from the previous model.
Its also taking up quality bike space.
Auburn Speedster looks nice, can I have a go mista?

Aye, the XK120 pistons were utter shite, so the old man's got MK3 Zephyr pistons. He never told anyone at the club, he'd have been blackballed.

Mine's still in bits. Mostly all there. And yes I'll try not to fall into the perfection trap.

    The '35 was a V12 Lycoming, the '36 a blown straight eight, so I'm tossing up between a BMW/Merc V12 and a blown LS1.

Even my painter is dropping hints that the Hiace is getting on a bit. (He's trying to shed projects so he can finish his own stuff). But I'll counter that it's the new Kombi so I 'must' keep it going. He's got a barn full of old brit rubbish so the emotional heartstrings will be playing. I hope. Still need wife's car, Stinger and RD400 I'm lining up after the van.
    I'm a bad person.
    . . . But he's a good craftsman (& a good mate) so needs must.
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
