I put some round the rear cylinder pipes of the VFR where they run very close to the rear shock. Not for the pipes but to try and keep heat away from the shock.

Ah yes the V twin thing. Nice hot rear header next to a performance item you don't want to overheat. Actually most high pipe systems have the same issue.

I get trikes like with VW engines and Italian scooters but liquid cooled engines..... whats all that about?

The VW trikes are a result of a really simple solution to making a trike - the engine and rear running gear is all set up to bolt into a inexpensive frame/body - bolt on a MC front end and done.

The coolest one I have seen had the VW engine mid mounted - somewhere I have old printed photo (pre digital) from Ruapuna when I was probably 17 or so.

Here is a google image of the concept - the NZ one I remember was low and purposeful looking. I must search what they use diff wise to reverse the engine.

Update - apparently all you do is flip the crown wheel.

Actually I'd like one. If it was designed right.

You can use a kombi transaxle, which had a pair of reduction gears built into the hub, you just replace the complete axle assembly with std bug items.

Gear linkages could be challenging, they felt pretty vague standard without any extra linkages to get around the engine.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon

AFASK they just flip the transaxel upside down.
or just use a Subaru transaxel for a decent gearbox
The casing classic cars had a Porsche 4 made into a race car mid engined

Taking the diff out and putting it in the other side with the correct shimming is pretty easy.

Vagueness is usually down to wear in the rubber couplings and bushes.

Reduction hubs were fine on Kubelwagens and for getting cheap lower gearing and height but other than that.....and 8 extra bearings.

I don't know why anyone would use a swing axle box when the IRS full independent is so much better, saying that I can't see the point in

spending all that money on a trike in the first place.

Anyhow back to the shed to do some work on my rather tired but well travelled 71'Westy. Anyone shipped a car to the US for a roadtrip?

Never thought of that back in the day, probably due to wanting to the starter motor at the top and the ease of reversing the crown wheel and pinion.

Clearly a lot of VW fake news around like " you only need to undo 4 bolts to take the engine out" and " they roll over around corners"... both of which have some facts but not a complete story.

Plenty of people have done it. its not fake news its simple geometry. its a way not be the best way.
the starter motor and all the other positions are irrelevant, and fixable
AS i also suggested the Subaru transaxel is a better option there are plenty of bell housing around. Dellow in Aus used to be thego to.

Be quick this has met reserve at $4500 only needs compliance and your away.

No needless fancy valve gear, silly clutches or rubber bands, just good honest Japanese engineering

It's getting collectible. Like just about any 70's Honda.

I reckon it could hit 5k. In a decade it could be double that if the restro is completed.
