    Looked it up out of interest a while back and one sold for 6k (I think! Maybe is was 8) US not all that long ago...

    Probably, some of the dissonance comes from us old'uns. I started riding in 1969; when say a new 1975-model bike came out it we all hailed the amazing improvements! the (infinitesimally) better brakes! actual indicators! (other than Mk I hands) and a spring on the kickstand!! So, many years later, if one's now used to new-century bikes the features and prices of the old bikes are, yeah, to yawn... but in their day they were cutting edge.
