I always wanted one of those as a kid.
Actually that's not true. I wasn't even aware that such a thing existed in the suburbs. As we were pushing our bicycles up a steep long hill a mate described such a contraption that was made for kids. Imagine, a motorcycle for kids!
Wondered what it would look like. Wouldn't have to push up hills ever again. Ahh. . .

We had a rm80 i think its was 78, but it never ran I think Dad said he couldn't get a piston or rings for it, so we used to tow about a fuji rabbit with our pushbikes taking turns to ride it...
    i had to settle for c50 then a xl100s.

Built my own (a bit much to call it a mini bike) Briggs and Stratton motor, modified small bicycle frame, wheel barrow wheels, direct drive. On reflection it was a piece of shit, but kept me out of trouble.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

This does look great with a cool 70s personification.

But RD400s have shot up to 7 maybe $8000. This hasn't run for years, they can degrade crankseals when not run. So why is this worth more than double an RD?

If it was the first model with the 4LS front brake, maybe. Not that the drum was better than the disk, but looked far cooler.

    This looks very good condition.

    https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/m...ing/5477542375

But why would you spend that much on an old trailbike?

I mean they weren't very good and a PE250 would clean one up and leave it's owner less wrecked if you took it into anything difficult.

I had one of those GT550J, in tests of the J vs K the drum out performed the later disc for about 3 consecutive hard stops, sold it for $600 about 75% rebuilt 27 years ago

They're quite nice and smooth to ride given the limitations of the bikes from that period

A year ago I bought an XR250A, the guy selling it had a XR500A for sale for $6500 looking well used but regoed and wof, it wouldn't have taken another 11k to have it looking like that one

    Actually I had an XR250A when I was 17.
It was pretty terrible. Top heavy and 23" wheel tended to sledge. I rode it offroad once and was put off the idea. OK I was skinny and it was too heavy, actually that's kinda the point.

That price does seem optimistic but at 50,000Ks that thing is barely run in.

The engine will be fine but probably due the expensive service. The suspension will be due a service or it will start to be a bit baggy and nobody bothers doing this. Sell and someone else problem. Chain and brakes worn by then.
