Americans wanted it - and thought they could sell it. The 465 is a better engine all round.

I think they were made better with mods to the head, changing the squish and other things. Still a cunt of a thing. Only my opinion of course, but I think by the time they got to 500cc, an air cooled single had all manner of *issues* the liquid cooled bikes didn't. The air cooled KX500's were shit too, and the RM500 not much better.

Ive seen a sidecar outfit with two cr500 engines in it. It wouldnt stay together from vibration.

You'd have thought Yamaha would have been wary of going bigger. They'd been there before with an air cooled 500 2T - what was it called ? The SC500 ?
    That didn't end well either.

No idea what that is you've posted - but Drew needs to see that chain run, LOL.

Paul Dobbs used to ride a (insert Japanese 4 cyl road bike model here) 400 with a KX500 motor on F3. Same thing, it was always cracking frames with all the shaking.

Only really large air cooled 2 stroke I've ridden that was nice other than the 465 was my 83 CR480. That was a fucken great bike left side kickstart aside.

    Yeah, that's a bit special.
Wonder what happens if you accelerate?

Eh? By the time the rider sits on it the chain will be more or less in a straight line (on the top side) from cog to cog.

You obviously didn't follow his sidecar build which involved a short drive chain to a layshaft concentric with the swingarm pivot...
The complications of a driveline avoiding structural members got quite amusing for a while.

I found it entirely not amusing.

Have a look at the chain link just ahead of the frame. It's real high. That puppy will have to have Rossane Barr on it before the chain is straight.

That's also why it needs to be 700cc.

OK, so I'm not an engineer and CBF trawling through the sidecar build thread, but to pick up on the point about short chain runs and layshafts and what not, the only one I have seen lately is this one: its the Classified Moto XR650 Big Wheel.

Would it have problems with the short chain run and jackshaft to clear the wide rear?

I am interested in a non-technical explanation if one is available.....

I love this bike - the first bike I ever rode was an RV90 (fell off it two minutes later and have been hooked ever since....) so this BW really appeals to me.

Cool bike until you slice your inner thigh open on the rear guard. And I own an RV90 FTW!!!
