Yamaha YDS3 information and parts?

First post big whoop.

Ive Recently aquired a 1960's Yamaha YDS3 cafe racer basketcase. which hasnt been run/raced in 30ish years and is missing bits and bobs.

So im looking for any helpful pricks with information, spare parts or any leads.

Spelt my handle wrong.

My father has one in the shed i will see if i can get some pics next time i am there it will be a bit ratty now which is a shame.
Before you ask No he won't.
I have the Yamaha twins book it has some pics and etc but they will be on Google.
From Memory they have a crank mounted clutch and iron cylinders?

Cool, Its good to know there are some still kicking in sheds around New Zealand .

This ones alittle funny. Has a fibre glass tank and manx style fairing with no headlight, no kickstart, sports a pair of oldschool amals and im told it was pretty flash .

It deffinately seen better days .

These links might be of interest. I couldn't see any YDS3 manual, but it might be lumped up in an all round Yamaha 2T Twins manual.

As husaberg said, Crank clutch and iron barrels.
That could be a rare one by the sound of Glass tank and old Amal carbs ??? If it's genuine ? Might be YDS1 !!!!!

Yup, ...pull in clutch while running, disengages revcounter and oil pump. Former not so bad,...starting revving though and bye byes.. I would love a YDS3 though. My old man had one back in the '60s

Hey - i do have a couple snaps - you will have to check them out on photobucket. my computer was having a hard time trying to get them uploaded.

Dont laugh , I havent "started" on it yet, but you can see its going to take abit of work,

i wont be throwing alot of money around because it doesnt have plates or papers and would probably never be road worthy.

frame has been cut and relded in number of places but is deffinately straight.

That looks a bit of a challenge for you.
The Amal type carbs throw me, for that reason alone I'm not thinking YDS2 or 3. My first 3 was a 1964 and the 2s were a year before that. (pre autolube and Pod air filters.)
Maybe you could search engine and chassis numbers to confirm or deny. There would be very few YDS1s in the world I would think.

I found the Yamaha twins book.
Send me the engine and frame numbers and i will have a look.
I will also post the relevant sections.
to me the Forks seem to definitely be road bike due to the taper.
The frame (due to the rear foot pegs) seems to be a road bike with the bracing tubes added.
the front brake is on the wrong side for a road bike though same side as a genuine racer.
The carbs look are they real amal? which would have been a common mod as the parts jets etc would have been easier to get.
This is not suggesting it isn't something special it may have a genuine race kit or just may have been altered during its life.
Me i am so loving its genuine period looks. esp the bacon slicers and the flanged rims......

Twotempi has the other yam twins book i think which will have more photos and text as the one i have is the road and race version.

I'd call it a homebuilt TD1. Whether it's from a DS2 or 3 i don't know.

You'll find out how serious a racer it was when you lift a head. If there's hand cut extra transfers - Z shaped slots - it's TD1C copy.
A lot of these and Suzuki T20's were built up in period and made quite good racers too.

personally, I'd abandon any thought of turning it back into a road bike - too much unobtainable stuff is missing, I'd rebuild it as a period racebike and look for the occasional parade event to run it. No point in trying to race it seriously either sorry....

Very interesting to see a survivor from the early 250 wars though.

Carbs look like Amal TT. Float looks like Amal GP "matchbox", and I reckon the front brake is Yamaha XS-1 (650 parallel twin). XS-1 had removable plugs in vent holes in the drum
