A hitchhiker got more than he bargained for when he flagged down a ride in Levin on Saturday afternoon.


The male hitchhiker was picked up about 4.30pm by an allegedly intoxicated 45-year-old woman driver who started to drive out of control and refused to pull over.

Police said the hitchhiker managed to grab the steering wheel near Manukau on State Highway 1 and pull the car over.

He then grabbed the keys and flagged down a passing motorist who rang police. The woman refused to give any details or give a breath test. She refused to accompany police so she was arrested and taken back to the Levin Police Station.

There she refused to give an evidential breath test or a blood test and assaulted an officer, police said.

She has been charged with assaulting police, dangerous driving and failure to supply details. She has had her licence automatically suspended for 28 days and is due to appear in the Levin District Court on Thursday.

Once when I was hitching I got picked up by an old bloke who drove like that - and he was sober! He was telling me he'd picked up a couple of other hitch-hikers who wanted to go to Hamilton but for some unknown reason they'd changed their minds and decided to get off at the Pukekohe exit.

I suppose he told you he'd been driving for 40 years and never had an accident?? Should have suggested he pull over for a well-earned rest - then made your escape.

He told me God looked after him - the way he was driving I figured someone supernatural was looking after him. Weaving across the lane, speeding up and nearly ramming the car in front then jamming on the brakes and nearly going out of control or gettting arse-ended by the car behind.
