82 was the first liquid cooled RM250...The Z. Animal of a thing. If yours was a floater and air cooled (1 year only) it was an 'X' (1981).

Yep those were the days RM's and YZ's were the weapons of choice, CR's and KX's just weren't as plentiful . Maico Husky Montessa even rarer . I started out in 79 on a PE175n into enduro bikes as you could ride them in more events MX, Hare scrambles, Enduros , Trail rides etc back in the day.

And why wouldn't ya be proud and want to show it off! I've always wanted one of those...but having owned a CR480 with a left side kicker...that keeps putting me off the idea.

Lol. No. Cause that'd be just too wrong trying to kick it forwards! I used to stand next to it and still use my right leg as trying with my left whilst on the bike was just too unco. Easy enough with a 250 though.

Yeah the lhs kicker was a bitch to start with. Once I replaced the OEM Bing carb with a Mikuni starting got a lot easier and the left side issue kinda faded away.

    Oi this thread is about 80's RM's...I love mine.1980 Rm125T & 83 RM125D

And what is it about you big bore riders that you are always moaning...whats not to like about cushy torque that your grandmother could ride.

    I wasn't moaning.
The title of the thread is 1980's MX'ers not 1980's RM's.
    Sorry for any inconvenience.

Lol. Quiet in the cheap seats. Just because you like riding girls bikes. Most mortals (me included obviously) can go around a race track way faster on a 125 or a 250 than they can on an open class bike. But that (to me at least) is missing the point. From the time I first cracked the throttle open on a big bore two stroke I was hooked. But just so we get to race on equal terms...I'll have my 84 KX125 finished before too long so we'll see then.

Nice bike Crasher, been watching some footage of Dave Thorpe in '81 on the SR500. Legend.

Still got a couple of boxes of piston's, levers, full gasket sets, O rings you name it for the Kx5 .

    What's your re-power plan ?
