I need to repair my zxr fairing. Any ideas besides plastic welding?

hey guys Im new to the forum. I have just picked up an awesome zxr250a model Kawasaki and while it seems all good mechanically sadly the fairing has seen better days. It has several long cracks in it but no chunks missing so I was wondering does anyone know where I can get such products as plastifix or plastex in New Zealand? I cannot for the life of me find it anywhere. Please help!

a mate of mine who is a plastics fabricator makes this glue type stuff he designed specifically for motorcycles. you can just pour, or brush it on to fill cracks and gaps etc. Best way is to weld it.

If it is cracked as in broken and cracked, you can drill some small holes along each side of the crack and use zip ties to secure it together (like a shoelace) if you arent worried about how it looks

IMO, take off the broken parts and just get them plastic welded, and then respray/touch-up where necessary. In the long run, it'll work out a lot better (looks, durability etc). I had a few bits of GPX250 fairing plastic welded a decent few years back... turnaround was pretty quick, and pricing seemed decent. Good luck

Plastic welding is your best option. However it only gives a 70% strength of an unbroken ABS plastic. Duramix gives 110% strength. However, both methods need experience. There are a lot of good plastic welders, not many folk know how to use Duramix (except me, I brought this product into NZ in late '80s and use it more than welding)

To diy it on the cheap, you can use this stuff called Titan Bond. They sell it at bunnings, dries white though. Used it on my RG fairings once and it held up for a couple of years.

I had my CBR954RR stolen a while back and recovered. The plastics have been broken ,.. but cleanly, and I have all the parts. I was wondering if you could PM me to discuss maybe using the Duramix,.. what the costs are,.. if someone can do it (you )

    Thank you mate,
    Shaun

If your not going to plastic weld and paint it will look cruddy no matter what you try so just duct tape it and give it the racer look
If you really are desperate you could try that stuff plumbers use on plastic drain pipe, their not joking when they say it sets fast!

From experience my advice would be to get it welded. You can fuck around trying to do it yourself and balls it up, or you can get it done right the first time.

Or buy a plastic welder and do it yourself.
Arborist available - Will trade tree work services for bike parts or servicing! PM me...

I agree. Anything else is not going to last and will look shitty.
I have a guy i use out in Waiuku that will repair it and prime it real cheap.
PM me your cell or i will reply with his number if you like.
Seriously though, i would be welding it for sure. Will be as good as new when it's all done.

    Thumbs up Done deal

I have finished it without plastic welding. It cost me a total of $43 and is strong as. Three layers of fibreglass on the back of the crack after some working with a drill mounted bur on both sides of the crack to roughen the surface. Then I pressed into the crack JB Weld Two part Epoxy cold weld. On top of that went fibreglass reinforced epoxy body filler. I then sanded the filler down, wet sanded it with 120grit, sprayed a coat of spray primer filler I allready had in the workshop with my spraygun, Brought a can of Enamel Green very similar to the green of the bike sprayed three coats within 15 mins of each other and then used the spray gun to apply two coats of professional house of kolor clear enamel that I also already had in the workshop. Looks good and will last untill I can replace the fairings.

I do intend to replace all the fairings with new ready painted ones I just needed this one to hold together for a trip to auckland and back.

    Cheers for the suggestions

Hey man this is very similar to a product I've seen called plastifix and another one similar called plastech. both of which I could not find in New Zealand. Jaycar also has a similar product
