    Steve McQueen

McQueen made James Dean look like a pussy

A thread on ADVrider with some great photos of McQueen I haven't seen before, this guy wasn't some privaliged actor,he went out there and really did it.Looks like he can handle a 650 Triumph in the dirt no worries at all,a lot of kids with the fancy bright gear would be out of their depth with that.

Yep - he made the US International Six Day Trial team on merit and came away with a medal.

I saw his cult movie "Bullitt" again quite recently. General storyline and acting is awful by current standards but that car chase between the Charger and Shelby Mustang is stilll sensational. Always fancied a Charger after seeing that movie (way before Daisy duke, hehe )

He wanted to do the driving in Bullit himself...so he got in the car, spun it out - you can see that shot when he peels out in a cloud of smoke, not long after it turned to custard,so a stunt driver was called in.I think it was Bud Edkins? who did the stunt riding for The Great Escape,he was one of the best dirt riders in the states back then.On Any Sunday is a good candid show of McQueen just having fun - his company funded the movie.

This is the off roader section - he's a sports bike rider isn't he? Why would he come in here?

He's a McQueen fanatic. Aswell as his other quirks.

    McQueen was certainly hell cool.

Bought Le Mans for my ex's Dad for his birthday. Brilliant movie, hadn't seen it in years. Couldn't have a film now-a-days with no dialogue for the first half an hour and bugger all after that. He did do the driving in that along with a heap of real Le Mans drivers. The one role he wanted but didn't get was in Grand Prix (which is still not available anywhere on DVD... mutters). Shame they replaced the street circuit with a track. It's a nice track but still nothing compared to the original.

Some cool pics there. Thanks for the link.

Still underneath the bull was some gems of info ( no I have foggotten them , or wasnt listening!!)

The amount of reverance He held Shichiro honda in was pretty frightening ,

Mind you he did blow up an sr 500 ,,snapped a conrod ,,, via a heavy right hand ,,,,

Still all the above bull doesnt detract that on any sunday, and all the other movies he made are pretty good , I mean most of em are still watchable today !!! by the younger folk..... which says alot

He's definitely the man, that barbed wire jump in the Great Escape still dose it for me, apparently he didnt rehearse it... (again on a triumph disguised as a BMW)

Also 'On Any Sunday' documentary is worth a look.

Apart from the chicanes now in the Mulsanne and the one prior to the start/finish, the circuit used for the Le Mans 24 Hour is just the same and not to be confused with the Bugatti circuit.

I have just finished another biography written after his death, and it just reinforces the fact that the guy was a totaly normal bloke, not an ounce of ''star'' in him at all.He spent a lot of time and money helping kids and families in need, alway hiding what he was doing from the press, and getting annoyed if they found out.All his own stunts, and if not then his mate Bud Edkins did them.I found a photo in one of my other books with McQueen and ''Briggo'' arms on each others shoulders and big smiles.
