    KLR650 market

    Hello adventure riders,

    I am new to the New Zealand motorcycle market and I am looking at buying a KLR650 to use this summer and then selling it. Are they easy to sell? I do not mind taking a small loss on the price.

    BTW, this is the bike I am currently looking at. The owner might be a member here.

    I might be lucky and able to keep it at a mate's place until next summer, but I prefer having a plan B.

    Thanks gwynfryn.

    I guess I should reframe my question. How big is demand for KLR650s around here? They seem to be popular, but I have only been researching for a couple of weeks, so you guys probably know better.

    I just don't want to sit trying to sell it for a month or more, as I do not have the time.

    Buy my DR800 if you want it?

    If you go with a KLR, no issues there....Woodman is the champ on these...Good luck!

    Thanks Waihou Thumper, looks good but I have to stick to LAMS approved bikes for the time being.

    Most on TM for sale are way over priced. You can buy a brand new one for $9k.


    Good bikes, almost unkillable.
    I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

    Why a DR650? They seem a little less common, at least on Trade Me.

    You have to ask this? Less common because all the owners keep them, plain and simple...

    Lighter and similar horsepower. A well set up DR is an easy bike to ride a long way and seemed easy to buy and sell if the pricing is sensible.

    I guess your primary concern from my reading of your original post is how easily you'll be able to dispose of your chosen machine once your touring New Zealand is done. Our market is relatively small - attractively / realistically priced machines like DR and KLR should sell readily.

    Both DR650 and KLR650 attract loyal followers (globally) - both being relatively simple machines. For plenty of opinions on both check out Adventure Rider .com or ADV

    I've owned two DR650SE - just sold a K4 (2004) I've used for 9000km in Australia for $AUD3200 on a purchase price 6 months ago of $AUD3900 - a vast country with a much larger market than NZ. I'm in Melbourne as I compose this - a city with a population the entire size of New Zealand.

    You may need to factor in licensing / registration costs plus any additions you add to the machine. I added a engine bash plate, consumed a set of 50/50 dual sport tyres $A500

    In my view you should be able to pick up a DR or KLR in NZ within the interval $3.5 - $6K (depending on age and KM's travelled) The KLR you were looking at looked good in my view.

    Say you purchased it for $6K I'd expect to sell it 10000Km and within 6 months later for around $5K - all hypothetical but indicative of my thoughts on buy versus hire. Good luck with your travels. My travels here in Australia have been helped immeasurably by the goodwill of fellow motorcyclists. Send me a PM if I can assist you. I'm back in NZ in mid January

    It is a no brainer Stephen. Look after it, equip it a bit and ride it, then sell it....Beats renting then for sure. You own it!
    The downside is be prepared to sell on behalf if you have to leave the country. Both you and the OP doesn't/didn't have that issue though so all good.

    Thanks Asian, Waihou Thumper and DR650gary! My questions might be a bit basic since I am not only quite new to motorcycles but also completely new to the New Zealand market. Your comments are very useful!

    Today I got all the gear I need and will check out that KLR on Monday. I already saw a DR650 today which is also interesting and a good fallback.

    I will base myself in Omokoroa for the summer and plan to explore as much as possible. Very keen to catch up with anyone willing. Coffees on me.

    The DR and KLR are very different bikes and both have passionate followers. I've never owned either but ridden both.
    KLR for long distance.
    DR for rougher conditions.
    I'll get flamed for this, but the DR is not a good bike for distance on sealed roads and at the least needs to have the plank replaced by a semi-comfortable seat.
    I think the KLR is a better round NZ bike.

    I Bought my DR 3 days ago and I've put 1,000km on it - factory seat that has had a visit to an upholsterer which made it fairly decent.

    One issue though is a lot of 2nd hand DR650 bikes have had mods done to exhaust & carb - they aren't exactly LAMS compliant anymore.
    They are fuckin' fun though!
