Canterbury Adventure Ride?

Fullers and Fullesses of Canterbury(ish).

If any of you have any ideas for a adventure ride (long, short or otherwise) around Canterbury (or its immediate surrounds) please speak up. It seems that there are a few who initiate rides on this forums and there are many that participate. This is not an issues until the few sometimes run out of ideas.

If any of you know of routes/tracks etc that haven't been ridden recently (within the last year or so), or somewhere that you really liked and want to go again, then please feel free to speak up. The rides don't have to be anything spectacular or particularly challenging but just an opportunity to experience your bit of the countryside.

Looking forward to going somewhere new.

Nothing new here, but I would like to do the CCC run backwards. The extra private property bits were nice but not essential.

Also like to do the run that looped behind Mt Hutt and past Lake Heron again sometime.

Pyramid Valley to Lake Taylor/Loc Katriene hasn't been done for a while.

Also Big River, Reefton!

Hmm - you've just given me an idea. Anybody keen on Big River and the Napoleon Hill/Nobles Creek natural Tunnels? Could combine it with a Arthurs /Lewis Passes loop and take in Lake Hochstetter and Lake Ahaura. Would be a big day (10-11ish hours) but doable if done as a one day ride though.

CCC loop backwards and Lake Sumner are both good ideas.

Weeell... There's always Clarence Reserve/Muzzle. Go in from either the inland Kaikoura Road and head north, or from Kekerengu via Bluff Station heading south. Would involve negotiation with a couple of landowners, some very careful timing regarding weather, and figuring out a way to get bikes across the Clarence. At normal levels we wouldn't have a dog's show of getting across...... It would be an awesome trip though. If anyone's interested.....

I enquired about just going up to the top of the hill at the southern end of that route a while back when we were in Hanmer, got a definite NO. But worth another try, you guys may know some local contacts, It'd be a great expedition.

I have been looking at maps of Tekapo area for a weekend ride.

My work owns a couple of holiday homes there and was thinking of booking one for a night or two as a base and doing day trips from there in the area.
Was thinking of a circuit around Lake Tekapo taking in the Macaulay hut. And on another day going up past Lake Alexandrina to the head of the Cass river valley.

Need to do a bit more in respect to talking to a farmer etc but thats in the pipeline.
Ryan, have you explored around here before?

I’ve organised a couple of rides in the past which was good and all went well, but I’ve noticed that the Chch adventure group has got quite large of late. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, just that it’s not me. I prefer smaller groups or going by myself, so I would be reluctant to organise a ride these days and have what I consider to be a huge turnout and then feel responsible as the organiser for co-ordinating the group and trying to keep track of everyone. You may think that wouldn’t be my problem, but as the organiser I would feel this responsibility, plus I just don’t like big group rides.

You guys who are organising the current rides are doing a great job of it, and hopefully doing so because you enjoy it and not because you feel pressured to do so. Cooneyr, you’ve done a fabulous job of organising the Dusty Butts, and al though I was unable to make the recent one – thanks. But you, or anyone else, shouldn’t feel you have to be organising rides for people. If you want to organise a ride for yourself then do so, if you wish to share that ride with other people on here then do so, but don’t feel you have to do either of these things.

I was surprised at the size of the group that turned up for the last CCC ride and this has contributed to my maintaining a lower profile. Don’t anyone take any of this personally, I’ve met a number of you, and some of you know me quite well. You’re all good chaps and chapess’s (except maybe that Shrek fella), but maybe some people are put off by the numbers?

As for upcoming rides I may tag along on one or I may not, who knows I may even organise something again one day.

I have been thinking about going for a ride to Lake Sumner sometime and camping for the night, but shhh ... don’t tell anyone ... and yes, TA, I’ll get the combo for you this time.

Fair comments FQ. The CCC ride caught me by surprise as well but thanks to a few others input the day went well (for most of us anyway). These rides are pretty much everyone for themselves so as an organiser you shouldn't be responsible for everybody every minute of the day. In saying this I hear what you are saying FQ, an organiser who doesn't "lead" or a participant who buggers off without letting others clearly know what is happening can be a pain.

It is the input from other people on these ride that make these rides work i.e. everybody helps each other out or provides advice when necessary. As an organiser or a participant you need to keep this in mind.

I've obviously shown my hand at this sort of thing so if you have an idea for a ride I'm happy to organise on your behalf if you dont feel comfortable doing it. The whole point of this thread was to be a way of getting some ideas for places to go.

As an aside I'm slowly working on an web site that is adventure routes overlayed on Google Maps. It will need GPS data or manually created KML (google earth) files to populate it. Hopefully if people keep submitting data in a year or so it will have a really good compliment of adventure routes shown for the whole country. This will hopefully make it easier for anybody who decides I want to go somewhere actually come up with and organise ride. More on this (new thread) when the web site is put up.

Please note , one and all, that the access from Kekerengu to Muzzle Station crosses a private right of way through the Greens property.(Remuera) Neither the owners of Bluff Station, nor the owners of Muzzle Station have the legal right to offer access to "the world" without the consent of the owners of Remuera.(who are mightily sick of the constant trespass issues.)

That's because the owners of Remuera fight off trespass on a weekly basis and get sick of people pushing and shoving to get thru.(whats special about these places, from our point of view, is that there is nobody here.Well, it was what was special- now its a circus)
