Breakdown cover

Greetings peeps. Just thought that I would pass some info onto you, it may help. My bike recently arrived from the UK, and so was sorting out insurance etc. Was chatting with the peeps from STATE, who gave me a pretty good deal, but could not provide breakdown cover, and they told me that neither would the AA. Accepted this at the time, but shortly after, a niggling thought made me go and see the AA. They do provide cover, and their insurance was much cheaper! so, it was duly swapped over.

Really? Would you mind posting the contact number for AA insurance and bike cover? Our insurance is up soon, and seeing as they (my current insurance co.) did a shitty job the last time we needed them...

State has a bad rep here mate. They would sell you your grandmother if it means them making money. Hell, they threw a tiz when I swapped my contents over because I didnt give them due notice? Do you have to give them notice?

Some site members have not had great experiences with AA callouts to bikes either.

I'm not insured with AA but I am a member and it's good to know that my $80 a year will at least guarantee that my bike will be picked up and transported somewhere safe if it should break down.
I'm fairly sure that my insurance (AMI) covers transporting my bike if it's involved in an accident.

Some site members have not had great experiences with AA callouts to bikes either.

I have the 'premium' membership package and have had nada but good service.

I've got my two bikes insured with AA now, and it is good to know they do offer assistance for break downs - that is the main reason I cancelled my membership many years ago. Haven't had to use it yet, so can't speak from experience. Both policies were a good price - the Goose was cheaper by at least $20 than any other place I tried, and the BMW, although not much cheaper for the premiums, had a $300 excess, unlike Protecta's 25% of the sum insured - ouch!

We're currently with State for the house, contents and a couple of the cars, but can't change right now as we've got a claim in for the cracked shower. I think AA is about the same price for house/contents though.

I'm with State AND I'm an AA member. I've called AA for cars several times (the Vortex we had kept blowing obscure little cooling hoses) and three times for the VFR750 (R/R was dying and battery ran flat, and once I ran out of gas on the way to work). I think I've used State's breakdown service once, but I'm not sure. No - hang on; I was driving the 205 which has a State sticker on the windscreen (for son, who's not an AA member) but wehn the alternator crapped out I figured AA would get there quicker.

AA's ability to fix bike-related things would be limited to jump-starting a flat battery, fuel shortage, or a lift if the bike's ferked (had to wait over two hours in the CBD for a truck to pick up the VFR750 when the battery was so flat it wouldn't run at all).

I've been an AA member for 5ish years and always had great service. Even things that I wasnt expecting to get.. That being said I've never had to call them out for my bike.

For example not long ago my missus car lost a fan belt while she was out doing the shopping (didnt realise till she got home.. she knew something wasnt right but wasnt sure what).

I rang the AA, to see how much it would cost for an onsite mechanic.. They came out and did it for free because I was a member.. Was bloody stoked. Took the guy a fair while to do it too, was the innermost of 3 fanbelts, in a tight cramped space, in the dark with only a spotlight.

At least for car stuff I've always had my expectations mnot just met but beaten.

I'm very tempted to do the same. I don't like have a $1500 excess on the bike, when I've been riding for a very long time...

Been totally pooped on by State, would not even consider going into their building. Been with AA for a while, nothing but good news from me regarding their effort...
