New tiny car thing in Wellington

Saw one of these today. Odd.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/news...ready-to-tango

What amuses me is that the benefits of them, to the wider comunity, basically apply to bikes already * - yet certain policies from council and police seem to be about discouraging bikes!

Owner Toa Greening believes if 4000 commuters swapped their car for the Tango model, the city's motorway gridlock and parking woes would be a thing of the past.

The vehicles could travel two per lane in a staggered formation, similar to motorbikes.

Greening and the automatic car's American inventor, Rick Woodbury, are looking to set up the world's first Tango manufacturing plant, and believe Wellington could be ideal.

    * this is why I posted here, and not in Rant and Rave.

Can you lane split with them?

That would really upset the cages

    It's hideous.

Might make some vague sense in an American city where it's much smaller than the alternatives, but it makes none whatsoever here.

And I'd like to see two of 'em ripping up the motorway "in the same lane in staggered formation like motorbikes".

I'd also like to know which motorbikes it's thinner than.

Pretty much anything I can see past my elbows. His measurements are based on the width at the tips I the mirror. Saw one in person at Eco expo. And it is narrower mirror tip to mirror tip than my old busa, my dr or my new wheels. But have you seen how narrow the mirrors are.

I saw it during my lunch break.

Apparently the "thinner than" comment is in relation to the Police BMW's, presumably based on widest point.

There's no way in hell I'd be wanting to take a four wheeler with that narrow a wheelbase (width) along the motorway when there's even a fiarly regular Wellington breeze. I've had my old Mini blown across a lane going past Ngauranga a number of years ago.

I don't get the parking thing. They'd either have to change rules so multiple of these can share one car park - which apparently is too hard to let bikes do - or let them use bike parks; or have a third type of park just for them. Makes no sense.

According to the inventor harder to roll than a Lamborghini due to 3/4 of the weight, about the same as a commodore, bring below the top of the wheel arches, even 2 up. I did however notice that even though I took the time to talk to him and showed unsolicited interest I was about the only person not offered to have a seat. At 6'4" 140 kegs I can't say I blame him.

If the council shows any interest in assisting this thing financially local motorcycle shop should raise merry hell asking why they are not getting support from the Council.

No way that thing will help ease gridlocks and congestion. What a bunch of BS. Just another contraption dreamt up by some guy with too much money and trying to make it sound like a viable idea. I'd love to see how well it will come out in a crash compared to a proper late model sedan that undergoes the same crash. The kind of people who will buy it are the kind of people who buy toyota Priuses and think they're helping save the world.

Their statement about being thinner than many motorbikes is an out and out lie. Legally the maximum width of a motorbike is 1m - the same width as this monstrosity.
