    The Suzuki GSV-R

i have seen this bike in a few mags and have just been 'riding' it as my bike in motoGP2.

    Got two questons:
    Is it a V4 or a v-twin?

Is there any road equivalent on the market?

    cheers

It's a V4..perhaps the firing order is like the Ducati V4 which fires like a twin?..and no road going equivalent yet.

Before this turns into another Suzuki Vs Honda pissing war, it's interesting that the builder of the worlds most powerfull inline four motor, turned to a V4, which they have no experiance with, for their MotoGp project.

Right, but I though we were chatting about suzuki here, and then you go posting about the builders of the worlds most powerful inline four motor? , seems that the v4 boys simply use their v2 technology. Maybe the old GSV-R is a couple of TL1000R motors stuck together. And yes I do appreciate that the GSV-R is only a litre bike not a 2L. But anyway you should get the idea, wasn't the TLR going to be suzukis ducati killer? And then the SBK rule change was let out so suzuki didn't bother? I'm thinking that's where they got the knowhow to build v4's from anyhow.

The only way a TLR was going to kill a Ducati back then was to drop it from 20 feet up.....147 RWHP in Yoshimura spec was never going to cut it so it never went beyond AMA racing, you had to rev the twin to make more HP,like the Ducati's at one stage, the cases said No...the Ducati's were a better overall package, even the Ferrachi Ducati's were in the mid to late 150's.....

Its an interesting debate really. Honda stole a march by building the V5, and they have had so much experience building engines of all configurations right up to V12 F1 cars. I guess Suzuki thought they needed to build a compact GP type engine to compete. Roberts tried to build his own V5 and failed getting enough power out of it. Ducati had to add cylinders because a twin would never rev hard enough.

Yamaha on the other hand seemed to have just thought bugger it, we'll stick to the in-line 4. All they needed was the right rider and his ace crew chief and the rest is history with them well on the way to winning their sceond consecutive title. If Rossi had stayed with Honda everyone would still have been trying to emulate them because I am sure the V5 would still have been winning.

So what's the moral of this story? I guess stick to your knitting. If Suzuki are good at in-line 4's they should have stuck with it like Yamaha, as the rider and the crew chief are probably more important than the engine configuration as long as the engine is pretty decent.
    Cheers
