The crappy fuel economy is not so good for commuting though I think the 4 bangers have it over us on that one!

I agree with the VFR, too.

For what it is worth - the GSX650f and its LAMS cousin - the GSX650FU are what I am looking at getting for my commuter bike (until I hit 35 - then its time for a 'Busa)

Yeah, it is a bit of a different ball park now, I think an SV thou would be a nice wee commuter, if it had another 50hp

Why spend such big coin on a commuter bike that is so boring?

Cause my 250 hornet is old and parts are hard to find, I took a GSX650FU for a test and it was plenty fun for me - I don't think my wrists would appreciate an hour long ride on a GSXR600

That and the Seat on the GSX650FU was heaven on my Butt Cheeks

The Hornet is easy to get parts for
It's still a significant amount of money to put in to something that doesn't do anything particularly well.
Unless you're buying an older second hand one?

Heavenly seat eh? Well, better buy it then

Wait, I'll give you fuck all for the Hornet because it's so old and hard to get bits for (being the most common Honda 250 in NZ)

I would say it depends if you just want it only for commuting or not.

If I only wanted a bike for commuting I would probably get another Ninja 250 or a 300. Fuel economy on smaller bikes is just too good to pass up, for me.

If you want a bike for commuting plus weekends though, like others have suggested, an ER6N or an ER6F could be good choices.

As for commuting on a supersport – I just got one and don't have any problems with it on the 60km trip to and from work. I miss the fuel economy of my old bike already though.

Try 28 minutes from the Puketitiri Museum to the EIT gateway - via Puketitiri Road, Apley Road, Dartmoor Road - turn right at Puketapu and cross the bridge, down Omaranui Road, turn left through Waiohiki and into Taradale ...

55ks .. 28 minutes .. did it every day on my 650 Bandit .. then tell me it's boring ..

If you can find me a fuel tank for a 96 hornet 250 without any dents in, without having to ship one from overseas for $1000+ then I will change my tune - it took me about 2-3 weeks of emailing every bike wrecker I could find to get a replacement tank - and even then its dented to hell on one side

As for not doing anything particularly well - when I test rode it, it moved my fat ass around in comfort, with enough oomph to give me a silly grin, was able to accidentally break 100 kph in a residential (honestly, I wasn't looking at the speedo and was used to my hornet and its rev noise) and was able to do a full lock uturn without any difficulty

That said - I am sure there are better bikes out there - for example, I will one day get my dream 'Busa, but I am in need of a bit more experiance on something intermediate first.

I used to do near 200km daily commute on proper twisty stuff and having ridden Bandits over those roads, no thank you. But still better than a car. Or a Hyosung. Or dick bleeding.
Nothin' sporty 'bout them infact, made the ZZR600 look positively sporty. And that was flabby as fuck

Why not repair it? Buying tanks for anything except Chinese bikes is going to be annoying and expensive. And more often than not repairing will be a cheap option.
Hmm, I suppose even the ol near 80hp tank will seem spritely after a Hornet

For your budget for commuting, I would personally go with a motard of some sort, 400/450cc or there abouts. Otherwise I would be looking at a higher price bracket.
Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.

Good luck finding a fuel tank for your 'fu' second hand at all, and I would imagine that would be the price for one from overseas as well

Also, (not that I've looked) yahoo japan auctions have plenty of tanks, and there is a guy there who cleans and ships them, around 300-500$ all up for a vfr400 one when I last looked/asked.
