    LOL...I live in hope?

...just seems odd that all other vehicles are forced by law an commonsence to have mirrors...yet cyclists? (And the stats prove most cyclists are hit from behind...linky?)

Cyclist need to move into the 21st century...the roads have changed, but they seem to reluctant to adapt even for there own safety?...hence, let the law do it for them (Like THATS ever gonna happen!...they seem to be invisible to the popo and currently get away with murder!...there own!!)

Honestly, the victim blaming gets us nowhere, and it is my firm belief that cyclists and cars (especially in chur chur) cannot share the road safely. And lighting yourself up like a christmas tree, mirrors, fricking hi viz and whatever you like (the guy with the LED ropes round his wheels I saw last night for instance) will not change that. Car drivers don't give a shit about other users safety its as simple as that. We get in our little box with our coffee, our stereo and our heater and comfy chair and its like being in the lounge at home... whats outside the windscreen may as well be on the telly.

All you do is make yourself an easier to hit target by adopting all that shit.

    My solution?, glad you asked

fully segregated cycle ways (it only will cost $18M FFS) into the city.
legislative change that reverses the onus of proof. Any vehicle that hits a cyclist or motorcyclist is deemed to be at fault until they can establish otherwise.
every car driver required when obtaining licence to complete motorcycle BHS and ride on road on two wheels.

    simple and effective.

    Ohh I like that part!

Yip, agree Henry, seperation would help alot...but could be difficult & costly to impliment.

My only bitch is the mirror issue as the stats clearly show that a majority of cyclists are hit frm behind, that alone indicates a problem with danger avoidance from the rear(Now THAT sounds bad lol)....or in basic terms...there blind to whats behind them, and its getting them killed!

...the fact remains, cars, motorcycles, trucks etc have ALL had changes made to them either law wise or physically to improve operator safety...yet cyclists?...what changes have they made to ensure there own safety?...training?...licensing?...investing in mirrors?...NUP!!...hell, they even bitched an moaned when the helmet law was introduced....and how many lives has that saved?? (Kids mostly thank god)

MIRRORS!...if its being used on a public road, it should legally be required to have mirrors!...may make some cyclists think twice before randomly swinging into traffic to avoid a bit of rubbish or pothole, just to end up under a truck that has 5 times the braking distance as the cyclist...who could have easy just stopped after seeing said truck coming from behind.

    ...you know it make's sense

Does anyone know, is it a bylaw in Auckland or false advertising on the part of bike shops that at one point or another almost all the bike shops have told me in one form or another that I can ride in cycle lanes?

Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.

Actually, I'm not sure that it does. In any scenario where a cyclist and other vehicles are sharing a roadway, there will be a speed disparity. And therefore there will always be vehicles approaching from the rear. A sane and sensible cyclist is usually pretty far to the left anyway, and has the sphincter well puckered (because of cunts whizzing past at speed 300mm away). We KNOW there are people behind us. We KNOW how vulnerable we are. In my years of communting I never once thought "wish I had a mirror" (usually it was "wish I had a rocket launcher"). Ears are the best defence in my experience. You can hear stuff from behind you if you're listening. One reason I never used a music player communting. It blunts the spidey sense.
