Yes accidents happen even when not intended, great example of the car vs bike problem.
I hate to break this to you but cars and trucks have already been doing the separate lane thing and still there's crashes...
The only real solution will be to upgrade the size of sewer pipes so they become a network of cycle tunnels. Lets face it very few of them cycle in rain and suddenly reveal they are closet car owners so will be safe in storm water system...
What we need is a change in behaviour from both sides. But we wont have that while the cyclists annoy the %^*& out of joe blow public with their constant whining and political lobbying of councils for special treatment and funding at tax payers expense. The NZ tall poppy syndrome is prob at work too with many poverty stricken motorists prob pissed at being held up by some obese mid life crisis lance Armstrong wannabe on a 10K carbon fibre bike worth more than most of the cars their holding up.
It would be an interesting experiment to get a control group of cyclists to convert to riding to work on old crappers for month with no helmet and no his vis or lycra and see if change in behaviour from both groups...

I'm sory to say it but you are full of shit. I am talking about cycle commuting. You seem to be talking about people who can afford nicer bikes than you do.
"lobbying" Who the hell spends more money than anyone and with more success lobbying gubblemunt than the truckies forum (sorry Road Transport Forum).
Add to that a blinkered approach from councils that "car is king", a refusal or inability to invest in a sustainable, mostly enjoyable alternative that pays for itself and has upside benefits for everyone INCLUDING car and truck drivers, and you have the clusterfuck that is road transport in this country.
Do trucks and cars have separate lanes from each other? where? talk to me about these crashes that still happen, please do.
I will say it again: if you have a separate transport infrastructure that physically separates cyclists from other vehicle users it is safer for the cyclists, it is better for car driving drones and truckies alike. What part of that dont you get? IT HELPS YOU AND IT COSTS FUCK ALL.

This baffled me the first time I read it but I just thought WTF? Here it is again so I can't let it pass. If the stats prove that cyclists get hit from behind, what are mirrors supposed to do? Create a force field that keeps total muppet drivers at bay?
There seems to be a national disease whereby silly solutions to existing problems are enacted, or we have to initiate silly solutions to non-existent problems.
Locally we have a new 80kph limit on several ks of the main road out of town. The accidents have been caused by muppet drivers pulling out of side roads in front of oncoming traffic. An 80kph limit will not fix that.
Now an idiot Police sergeant is suggesting a 30kph limit for all suburban streets in town. This appears to be a solution in search of a problem, we have not had a rash of pedestrians being mowed down by cars doing between 30 and 50kph. The sergeant should find something more suited to his abilities (whatever they are), like gardening.

these look fairly straightforward and the recipe is metric which is nice. Should be fairly do-able I reckon and we will have most of the stuff in the cupboard.
I don't tend to do a lot of baking but I reckon I could knock these up one evening.... so tasty.

I too am baffled Pritch....as to just how hard is it to make a link to limited rear visability and repeat accidents and fatalities involving being hit from behind.![]()
Mirrors certainly won't provide anything more than added visability(altho sheilding...would be damn cool! lol)...the same visability that all road going vehicles enjoy and are legally required to have (something do with studys proving that seeing approaching vehicle's...tends to reduce the chance of pulling out into there path by mistake)
So its certainly NOT a solution, but it may help, and its an affordable option for most to invest $20-$50 to add more visability and safety to there peddly. (I think there are lots of things the public, councils and cops could be implimenting to help....but they seem to be draggin the chain when it comes to action)
...But just to stress a point, I truly do feel for cyclists, they are the most vunerable of our road users...and they are dying at a horriffic rate on our roads, we ALL need to make concessions and make changes to our driving and riding "habits" to have any effect on the current death toll...anything that helps aid the rider and the other road users must be, at the very least, looked at and considered.
...cyclists may not have the leathers...but there on two wheels just like us, hence we as a group, should understand there vunerability a lil-bit more than most, and support there right to ride safely on public roads.

None. It has been conclusively proven that helmet laws don't work (that's the law, not the helmet). In the 5 years after helmets were made compulsory in NZ the hospital admissions for cyclist head injuries dropped 15%. At the same time that bicycle use dropped 85%.
Sorry, I read that study when it was produced in the late '80s and don't have a link.
