Stolen Auckland - Caberg Tourmax white XL helmet

Was padlocked to my bike in the Greenlane Countdown carpark tonight, looks like they used bolt-cutters to snap the padlock while I was inside (for about 20mins) and took off with it. Only had it since Friday (imported).

Won't be many in NZ yet as they're a relatively new model (basically a Duke with a 'peak'). Hadn't installed the pinlock yet so will be missing (comes standard on these). Had also started to fit it to my odd shaped head via judicial sanding, so I should be able to tell if it's mine by removing the lining. Looks like this:

    Bugger!
Moe: Well, I'm better than dirt. Well, most kinds of dirt. I mean not that fancy store bought dirt. That stuffs loaded with nutrients. I...I can't compete with that stuff.

shit! I park in there quite often, and only use a cheapie lock to lock the helmet through the bars..

Gonna be a bit more careful from now on...

Where did you park? I usually bump up the kerb by the pick up service spaces..

You should be right, I was parked miles away by comparison, under the trees running along the side road, in the (relative) dark .

Manager was kind enough to let me leave the bike in the shop entry way though while I went home to retrieve another helmet. Been locking my helmet to the bike for decades, first time I've ever lost one.

    Bloody bastards!

I'm really sorry to hear that. It's a nice looking helmet and even more annoying is that it was a new one. Will keep my eyes open down here, just in case.

I often wonder, though, when I see people leaving their helmets on their bikes, usually unlocked. Can't believe they stole yours, even though it was locked to the bike. No chance to get any video footage?

You could make a post with a picture of the helmet on your fb page. We can share it and maybe someone will recognise the helmet, especially if it is a rare one.

Actually post something on my FB page? Madness! Funny the guy in the taxi suggested looking for video footage as well, very CSI, but I doubt if the Police will be all that interested (case in point: I rang the crime reporting line 4 times earlier tonight, got cut off 4 times...will try again in the morning.) They left me a piece of the padlock as a souvenir, though.

Thanks Conny, not sure I'm gonna want it back though if I don't know where it's been.

True that. But at least they wouldn't get away with it.

You could also post the video on fb if you find one. Hope you managed to talk to someone on the crime hotline yet. I would have gone directly to the police station to report this, but it's not as busy here.

CSI hehe, I hope you bagged and tagged the padlock. They will likely have fingerprints on them.

Yup answered first pop in the morning, nice young thing took all my details and also asked if I needed victim support (aww bless). Insurance is a bust due to helmet being worth the same as the excess, so I've ordered a different one from Motomail (cheers Fern) 'cos I've got some vouchers for there, which eases the financial pain a little - you should approve, it's a Bell this time.

Been carrying my little piece of nipped padlock shank around in my pocket and showing it to anyone who'll listen, so no forensics there anymore I think. Also ordered a big, honkin' u-lock off the web for next time.

Haha, sure do approve. Which one did you get?

I've got one of those little snap bike locks on my bike for double D ring helmets. Not sure how secure that is though.

It's a Revolver Evo like this:

No groovy graphics unfortunately (it's a flip up). No pinlock either which is a shame.

My new lock weighs 2kg and would have to be cut twice with an angle grinder, I may be over-reacting a little.

Given its value and the ease of nicking it, or just being scratched by some passing wanker, why don't you take it with you when you park up?

Just as much (probably more) chance of this wanker scratching it / dropping it while carrying it around. The bags that come with most helmets have got to be the most useless things ever invented, plus I've got another bag I need to carry already. Bike's my only transport, don't have the option of using a car for shopping etc. Do have a top box, but the locking mechanism on that is probably less secure than the padlock I used to have, and the old new helmet wouldn't fit with the peak. This one might.
