License exemptions?

Hi Guys,

I've heard from a few friends that friends of theirs, have acquired a license exemption to allow them to ride bigger bikes being to tall for the "required 250" sized bikes.

Being 6'4 tall a zxr250a or hyosung isn't the biggest of bikes to accommodate my height / size.

The 600's are much more suited to my size ( funny that! ) so I'm wondering if anyone knows the process on how to apply for an exemption to ride a larger bike?

you dont have to ride a 250.
you dont need an exemption.
go search LAMS. you are allowed to ride selected bikes of up to 650cc in size.
there are some 250cc bikes that you can NOT ride on your learners.

I think what nodrog is trying to say is that unless you are trolling it might pay to visit the LTNZ website or google LAMS list.

Never heard of such an exemption and I think NZTA would be bloody unlikely to give it.

I'm 6'3 - 6'4, and I fit an 07 Ninja 250. And there are plenty of bigger bikes available under the LAMS rules. ER-6F LAMS and GSX650FU spring to mind out of sport models, not to mention DRs, DRZs, heck there's even a LAMS V-Strom now.

If a ZXR250 is too small for you then why do you already own one? (I assume you do judging by the bike on your profile) That's one of the smallest bikes I've ever sat on.

I've known guys who were 6'4" on Ninja 250s and the newer CBR250s. I'm guessing, just guessing, that you're just wanting an excuse to skip the learner/restricted period...

Its totally legit but they keep it quiet other wise nobody would bother getting a license.
You need to go to local agent and offer a suitable bribe like a few cans of compression or maybe yacht fuel if their into sailing.
They cant afford to have people waving these special licences about so just assume you have one several days after applying.
These licences mean you don't have to stop for cops either, just keep riding, after a few kms they turn off the party lights to show approval of your status.

Yes you can apply for an exemption. You would be best to talk to the people that dish out the licenses for info. I believe that is very discretionary and if you are a young bloke, prob don't even waste your time.
As everyone has said, there are loads of more than adequate machines available under LAMS

There IS an exemption ... or was. There has been a few threads on the subject ... (try the search facility)

But the LAM's legislation changed the demand somewhat. As has already been suggested ... there are plenty of (OK ... a few) bikes on the LAM's list suitable for the "altitude enhanced" riders ...

But ... If you don't ask ... you don't get ...

There are plenty of roomy learner legal bikes to be had out there since the rules were changed (over a year ago!) to 600cc depending on power/weight ratio.

The smaller V-Strom has plenty of leg room, and I'm pretty sure it is LAMS approved. It'd be a much better fit -
