Im in Kaitaia but I could take the engine out and get it as far as Auckland if need be. It looks like the engine is pretty much completly apart to replace the shaft so I'm looking to get the top end done at the same time, kips valves cleaned up etc. Anyone got any ideas on costs? I'm pretty keen to keep the bike going so don't want to give up and flick it off.
Any and all advise much appreciated.
p.s the bike was running really well untill the shaft stripped out (resulting in a fairly long walk back along 90 mile beach haha) but it has been gathering cobwebs in the shed for a few months while other projects took over.
is the shaft stripped out totally or just a portion the width of the front sprocket? if its not totalled you can grind the teeth off an old front sprocket
(to reduce the diameter) and weld it to the existing front sprocket (to effectively double its width, or bite area) and run it that way. crude but it can work perfectly and postpone the need for surgery. you'd need to see wether it best to have the additional section at front or rear of the driving sproc
depending on where the best shaft spline is, chain alignment etc.
good luck
