Need more info on your travel... Domestic? International? Region of the world?

Essentially, depends on the airline, but you're definitely best to have it in a proper helmet bag (not the thin one that comes in the box).

I have taken a helmet as hand luggage to that most anally paranoid and vindictive of nations, the United States of America. I walk free.

Ask the airline for sure and cover it or put it in a compact bag.

I never gave it any thought when I flew Sydney / Singapore / Delhi.
I was short on space so attached it to my Camelbac as carry on, all the way to India and back to Singapore no problem then got stopped on the last leg back to Sydney.
It was a security risk in their eyes even though I had flown the whole way on the same airline.

A Arai cover might have been enough, out of site out of mind.

I travelled to Australia in May. I carried a helmet as hand luggage on Air NZ to Adelaide and out from Darwin on Jet Star to Brisbane and then back to Auckland on Emirates.
    No questions were asked.

I always take my helmet as hand luggage, no way I'm trusting the luggage handlers. Never had any problems anywhere I've travelled.

Doesn't your helmet also double up as a second suitcase ?
