    1995 zx9r - few questions, also - 1996 zx7r

Im looking at buying a 95 zx9r for a commuter( and the odd sunday thrash ), at the moment im spending 500$ a month on petrol.

only other options for bikes are gsxr 600 or 750 (injected models) and the zx9 or zx7, or possibly a cbr 900 ? any other (full fairing sportbike) suggestions for around the 6-9000$ mark ?

This is prolly a stupid question but has anyone got a similar zx9 or 7 model and could give me an idea on fuel economy, i wont be riding hard, but will have a passenger most of the time, what sort of litreage does the tank hold, how many kms per tank

    Cheers

Hey man - First of all Welcome to KB!!!
I had a zx9 (94) that I commuted on, and used for weekend blasts outta town. They're a slightly heavier bike - commuting I could do 280km, and giving it shit I could empty a tank in 160k. They pack a good punch, but if I had my time over - I would have got a 600 injected. That'll be more feul friendly for commuting, and still more than enough for a good weekend blast. the 900 killed the tyres too which got a bit X'ey after a while whereas the 6undys are more rubber friendly.

But in saying that - if you have the spare coin to devote to Motobikes - get the fireblade over the Kwaka and if you can show good ol self control, then get a thou. you'll never look back.

    Good luck mate
    Because I can...

Cheers !!I have a little self control , my budget is from 6-9k i cant really find an injected bike for that range... i most likely will buy from a dealer as i want to finance it... i really wanted like a gsxr 750 96 - injected , cant find one at a dealer at the moment

what sort of fuel capacity does they hold man ? the thou is a longterm thing, but it is in the pipeline

Any reason to get the fireblade , apart from it feeling a bit lighter. ?

You'll get a bloody nice Gixxer six for that sort of budget. It'd be the cheapest overall to own.

Oh yeah, and it's a Gixxer, so you'd instantly be a better person than all thos Honda and Kumandsukme riding plebs.

And you never will. They weren't fuel injected.

Last tank I got 280km off 17.25 litres in the 9R - didn't run it to reserve, but it was off the bottom of the gauge. I don't ride with a pillion, but I'm pretty heavy myself (120kg... should go to the gym...)

I'm commuting on it at the moment and will be for the foreseeable future. No probs.

I couldn't reccomend a GSXR or a 'blade if you're planning to ride 2up often, I think the 9R has a bit better pillion pad than either of those two...

EDIT: You asked about fuel capacity - I'm pretty sure it's 17.5 litres to reserve.

    That sounds quite good actually

so 280km for about 28$ gas (assuming you run on 96-98, i run everything on 96-98)

thats not too bad, i may go the ZX9R as i will be 2-up most of the time, the Mrs did notice that the 9r had a nice rear seat and she wasnt wayyy up above me like some of the newer sport bikes

How do you find it through the traffic ? they are a little bulky but still feel nimble

*Drools* hopefully i can get it before the weekend

Yup, 98 was the first injected Gixxer. They've got a nice pillion seat but it's a bit higher in relation to the rider than the ZX9.

Cool.. The ZX9 is sounding like the more attractive option... few more cubes, better passenger seat for the mrs to sit on, as we will be commuting on it most days comfort is important....

    later that day.............

Just got back from Mt Eden motorcycles, test rode a 96 ZX7R , vert nice bike a bit smaller than the 900(good cause im a shortarse) , and felt a wee bit lighter. very nice to ride, the 900 was a bit more torquey down low til it got on song, apart from the bung front tyre from being ridden on the motorway so much, the throttle cable sticking a little, the right hand fork seal leaking, speedo not working, small crack in fairing, it was a pretty tidy bike with 20,000 on the clock and anodized purple footpegs, carbs need a balance tho.

Anyone got one of these ? can tell me some fuel mileagez

Mmm - Go the 9. Comfy seats for two up and generally nice stable ride.

IF YOU CAN GET A GSXR750 THATS INJECTED THEN ITS A NO BRAINER , THE FIRST 2 ZX9S HAD GEOMETRY PROBLEMS WITH SWING ARM PIVOT LOCATION , THE ZX9 C1 AND LATER ARE GREAT BIKES , 96 AND 97 GSXR750 THAT ARE NOT INJECTED ARE ALSO GREAT BIKES WITH A SUPRISINGLY COMFY RIDING POSITION

I'm with Winja on this one. I did a lot of research before buying my bike. The
    98 ZX9R (C series ) was a big improvement on the B series & the 00 ZX9R ( E series - no D series ) was a big improvement again.
    I wouldn't pay $9,000 for anything earlier than 98.
I got my bike from Bay Motorcycles in Tauranga - they had more 9R's coming in than all the Auckland dealers combined.
