Surely a service station employee isn't legally obliged to carry the cost of a drive-off? Unless it's stated in their contract, of course.

As for stealing petrol, no way - I hate thieves and wouldn't want to lower myself to their level.

The Gull in Manurewa is on pre-pay in the mornings, surprise surprise. Went past 3 other petrol stations to get there and they where all empty!
So gull hasn’t put their prices up and are now making twice as much money than the others! Good on them!
Have never done a runner, bad karma!

The funny thing is that when I fill up gas around Orakei/Remuera, I am able to fill up and then pay. While in Papatoetoe and Manukau, I have to pay first then fill up.

Hmmm, think I witnessed a runner tonight! I filled my car with gas and had a van in front of me, chap had pulled in behind me and was filling up when I came out from paying so I was blocked in. He then got in his van and backed up so I could get out, and he drove towards the shop area, thought he was going to park up to go inside and pay but he ended up driving out. I ended up following behind him for quite some way, wasnt sure how he had managed to pull up after me, but manage to pay before me?

Theft is theft...not at all cool or moral. Still tempting sometimes...expecially when filling a 60litre tank with 98 octane fuel...hence the bike is now the weapon of choice not the car...stupid hunk(fast hunk) of metal.(handles well too )

That's illegal. Another example of managment abusing their staff.

Even in the contract it's still illegal. The Wages and Saleries Act clearly states that the employer can not deduct monies from an employees wages unless it is agreed. This agreement is for deductions of union fees, social club fees etc. not for theft by patrons etc.

Some companies where there staff are responsible for the handling of cash claim that there staff are responsible for any 'shortfalls' in cash. They are not.

Back in the 60s a mate of mine had an old Buick, with wooden floor boards - they would park at a service station after hours.....over the tank fillers, lift the floorboards, pull the caps and drop down a stirrup pump, pumping into 4 gallon tins in the car.

In the early 70s as impoverished pisshead apprentices, early in the week, after the weekend, but before payday - we would walk the streets at night openly carrying a 4 gallon tin and a length of hose.Petrol was 50cents a gallon and my Chev coupe did 10 mpg,my International pick up did 4 mpg.

Some places allow you to swipe a fuel card and pay at the pump itself. I know Mobil does this as I use a fuel card to pay for my petrol in the bike. Filled up today and it cost be $20 for the FXR. I remember a time not long ago when $12 would fill me up full. But I'm not too worried, before it becomes too expensive to fill up my bike it will be so expensive to fill up a small car that demand will surely decrease and the petrol price will either remain constant or go down as a result.

    AMEN!!!!

Im with you on this one, it will push it back down the line to the oil companies. What gets my bit foaming is the fact petrol went up 5c last week, 3 the week just gone, yet crude has come down after the Katrina disaster... we see no reflection on that, gull was the last to raise their prices.

It wont be long before people start truck - jacking the tankers, the way petrol is going apparently its going to be as high as 1.95 a L by christmas

methanol is only 2$ a litre, at the airfield...

Edit: its 6:44am this doesnt make much sense

Not overly into the whole theft thing myself, but on the other hand I can appreciate how alot of people are hurting due to the price rise. It seems that if somebody sneezes in the middle east the prices go up, and from my reading it would seem that the oil companies have closed down refineries so that they can reap a larger profit - produce less fuel but sell it for more. I know for myself I don't ride as often as I used to, doing alot more walking now or simply ringing people up instead of visiting. Heck, put $25 in the other day and that wasn't to fill the CBR, when only a few months ago $17 would fill the thing .

Nothing wrong with making money, however this needs to be balanced up against being a good citzen too.

I once worked at a servo and the employer tried this trick on me ( putting a clause into my contract that said that I was liable for the cost of drive offs). When I questioned him on this he took the clause out but from what I have heard it is quite common pracitse.
