Long riders?

After buying a 20 year old road bike, only my forth since the 60s, I didn't think it was going to be off the road for many months over the last year, but now I think it is ready to go to the South Island. After doing 14000km around the North Island I'm thinking seriously of leaving from Auckland in time to reach Invercargill by the end of November. Who else has planned such a trip?

I regularly commute between Aleaxandra and Hamilton. I know that is 3 hours in total shorter than you are asking about. But that is only a single tank of fuel in difference.

If you want to reach Invercargill by the end of November I would advise you to leave Auckland no later than 8:00 am on the morning of 29th November, book the last ferry on that day and stay the night in Picton. You should reach invercargill by 8:00 pm on the 30th.

Or you can make a more leisurely trip of it and leave Auckland a day or two earlier.

Send him the "lighthouse" route? Should have time.

Always wanted to do the lighthouse run. Never had the holy trinity of a bike the money and the time at the same time.
At least I have enough camping gear and a bike now should the money or the time happen along.

In case that is a bit vague, the lighthouse run was something polytechnic riders used to bang on about doing over summer break. Those that didn't need jobs.
Between October exams and February term start you go and have a visit of every light house. Most went clockwise up to the cape via west coast to welling it via east coast etc.

Most took the challenge to mean no paid for accommodation.
Most would be real gutted when comparing notes and photos on return to find they missed one somewhere.

No internet. No GPS. Hell in 1994 none had cellphones. Just a calling card and a payphome directory.

Does the South Island have them as well? They don't readily come to mind.

Dunno. To be fair some of them only have a plaque these days. Apparently during whaling times there was over 30.

Start the engine and head down the southern motorway ... that's a start. There will be lots of bikes heading for the Burt Munro.

Heaps of them. Now that gives me an idea for an endurance ride. Photos of as many South Island light-houses as possible within 48 hours. To make it more difficult we could start and finish at Tarras (The furthest point from the sea in the South island).
