Moron in a 4WD on Rimutakas - yes, it's true!

The BMWOR had a ride over to Lake Ferry today, great day out but it could have ended in tragedy. As my husband and I rounded the corner before the summit at the top of the Rimutakas, a guy in a 4WD towing a trailer pulled out in front of us. It was a boat trailer with a sheet of plywood on the base, and on the top of that he had a pile of 4x2s - a full row tightly packed on the bottom, and about half a dozen more on the top, held in place loosely (and I mean that in the true sense of the word!) with a really flimsy tiedown. He wasn't driving slowly and immediately we noticed the top 4x2s jumping up and down and moving from side to side, so we backed off a bit, waiting for the chance to pass him. About a km from the summit on the Wairarapa side, one of the boards slipped sideways (no, unfortunately it didn't stick in the fence and cause the tosser's trailer to jacknife...) and then next thing, his tiedown snapped and the ratchet mechanism flew off and landed on the road in front of us. Thankfully it didn't bounce, so my husband flashed his lights and blasted on the horn to alert him. No response, not even when one of the boards flew off the trailer and also landed on the road in front of us. We slowed down and tried to kick it to the side of the road, but one of the bikes following us ran over it (thankfully they didn't come off). The driver then decided he would pull over - to the right hand side of the road! I was too busy yelling at him and telling him what a fucking moron he was to get his rego, but I wish he had as the load was not secured properly and he obviously didn't bother checking it when he stopped at the summit.

It's a shame the cop who was riding with us was at the front of the pack and missed this or the guy would definitely have been done! And on the way back another 4WD was wandering all over the road - coming up to the little bridge at the start of the hill on the Wairarapa side he had two wheels over the centre line, forcing an oncoming car to pull over to avoid hitting him. Surprise, surprise, when we got to the passing lane we found he was talking on his cellphone and smoking!

I think they should raise the tax component for those who CAUSE accidents rather than those who are the victim of them! Or just put a blanket tax on those who choose to drive a 4WD - sorry, Motu!

Glad your still here to tell the story. Sounds like the Rimutakas are full of idiots.

And if it was a Holden ute towing the trailer all Holden ute owners would be tared with your brush?

Insecure loading, certainly an offence. If it was his $40,000 boat on the trailer it might be better secured?

No. They're just average everyday non-skilled, non-killer drivers. They can't possibly be doing anything wrong, as they're not speeding.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?

Don't care what make the 4WD is, the majority of them are driven by people who lack basic road skills and only drive them because they are 'safe'.

I bet he borrowed the trailer and the sheet of plywood - and the tiedown too! It was a really crappy one - one of the following riders managed to run over that too - thought they would have seen it as the strap was bright orange...

I had to pull back the other day when following a truck - the tail gate was swinging and he must have carried a load of fine sand earlier because it was flying everwhere each time the gate moved.

I am amazed he even got as far as the summit because the boards were sliding all over the place when he pulled out. He would have been better off to either tie them in a bundle and try and secure that, or try and load them in the back of his vehicle.

I think you have a problem - were you bitten by a 4x4 as a child? They don't buy them because they are ''safe'',they have no conception of ''safe'',they buy them because they are big, which only amplifies their poor driving skills - they are just as bad in a Corona.

Once more - it's poor driving skills - NOT the vehicle.

Father-in-law came home with a white patch (boat paint) on his shoulder after a wanker in a 4WD towing a boat decided he needs BOTH lanes to navigate corners!
Sorry Motu, but when 90% of 4WD drivers act like fucking retards then yes I will be tarring them all with the same brush!
This is out of a sense of survival, the same way every gun is loaded and every snake is poisonous!
No offence, I still treat Volvo/Merc drivers the same as 4WD's and Ford's/Holdens are cops till proven otherwise!
My biggest fear; A Volvo 4X4 with a "baby on board" sticker and a Taxi sign on the door driven by an Asian lady on a cell phone!
We all have our little obsessions...

Was riding in a mates 4X4 tthe other day. He kept crossing the centre line at every turn blind or not and didn't seem to notice anything wrong with that. I yelled at him and made him pull over. His respons was, "I need to keep the momentum up" My reply, "Wich would you choose, keeping your momentum or having to explain to someones family why you ran over there brother/siter/mother/father/friend/what not. If you're gonna keep this up I wont be hanging around with you much longer"
He doesn't cross the centre line anymore.

You guys need to calm down a bunch, you only perceive 4wd owners as bad because you only remember the bad ones, you're as bad as the cagers out there who perceive all bikers as bad because of the few that spoil it for the rest.

We better change to Asian Driver bashing - I've seen a 100 times more beyond stupid Asian drivers than I've seen bad 4x4 drivers...no contest...in Auckland that is.

Yes - saw all you beemer types out and about today, looked like you had a good turnout!

We must have been right behind you as we just missed the tie down and the 2 x 4 and a little farther down saw mr 4wd running up the hill to pick his crap up. Would have tried to get it off the road myself but didn't fancy our chances of stopping without being mowed down...

Still, just another day on the hill really! Morons on 2, 3, 4 and more wheels...

    (bloody busy today)

Fantastic day though! Really wonderfull to be out and about!

    Cheers

    Bloody arse biscuits
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods
