free bikes (well, actually a rant)

Well, they aint mine and it seems the owners dont want em.

Almost daily now I see lots of bikes sitting in parks, none are locked (not even stearing locks) and some are in those out of the way places where anyone could just push one away.

There are brand new machines, scooters, half wrecked bikes - all of which would make good spares or race bikes or whatever else people do with them.

So anyhow, if you post in the forum about your bike getting nicked and someone takes the piss out of you because you didnt lock it, lets just say - some people probably have it coming

Personally I dont care if people cant be bothered locking their bikes or taking basic anti-thief steps to make them harder to nick. What I do care about is people creating a nice market for the thieves to operate in. Sooner or later that market is going to lead to somone trying to nick my machine and that would piss me off no-end.

So anyhow, if people would take the 20 seconds to lock their bike up and make it a little harder for the thieves - it sure would help the rest of us

It should make it safer for your bike. Just park next to one of these lock your bike up and the thief will take the easier option.....

No, really it's just something I've never really had the need for except recently.

What would I be looking at for a cheap'ish wheel lock? I can't get anything too bulky, (there's no room left in my bag when I goto the gym as it is).

Can anyone recommend a good quality lock. Maybe something that's brightish, or obvious. Save trying to ride off with it still in place...

Also, do they work with all bikes? I note for some odd reason that the helmet lock on my bike doesn't accomodate my CL14 helmet. So do all wheel locks work on all bikes. Or at least sport bikes with three spoke wheels?

Further, do they damage the rims with the constant, on/off regime?

Im assuming when you say 'lock' you mean a disc lock? I have a fairly substantial 'bike lock', like you would lock your bike to a poll or something... Of course theres not always something you can lock your bike to, and you hope that 'just around the bike itself' is enough.

I always lock the steering at the very least, and I remove the velcro-attached clock! I have a disk lock that is used in our garage but I haven't used it when out riding because most of the time I go for a ride and end up at home rather than stopping somewhere along the way. It is easy to attach and I would use it if I had to park the bike somewhere a bit isolated and leave it there for some time.

All our bikes are locked in the garage, some have very heavy chains securing them, but all have at least a disk lock, plus there are deadlocks (normal garage doors) and padlocks (on the tilt doors) so it would take a pretty determined effort for anyone to steal them.

Prevention is the best policy - I lock the car when I go in to pay for my petrol too, don't fancy some mongrel stealing my CDs or parking money!
