    Festive Cheer from the Popo

popped out to rent a movie this evening. Took the cage. On the way saw lots of police cars, then the booze bus. Fair enough, lots of partying this time of year and driving boozed up aint a good idea.
Was stopped on the way home. No problem, been days since I have had a beer.
While the machine was analysing my breath sample mr policeman checks my rego label which I know expires on 24th December. I also know that I bought a new label online this week and am waiting for it to come in the mail. (good service that BTW)
Mr policeman tells me my warrant is nearly up and to be careful of that. I replied my warrant is not due until July 2015. He was looking at my rego.
Oh, says he, I mean your rego is almost up. Yes, I said, on 24th December, but I am legal until then am I not?
Hmm, says he with a very stern expression, you need to be very mindful of things like that
Ah, says I, I have already purchased a replacement label online.
He got a bit cross then and said "it should be on the car then"
Before I said what I really thought I drove off.

Police have a tough job and all and I know most are decent spuds but come on!!...a telling off even though the vehicle and driver are perfectly legal? Its not really the way to engender community spirit lads is it? Safer Communities Together, hmmm work on the community bit is required methinks.......

Crate Day? Must be a new thing as we didn't have that when I left Oamaru ... although that was 27 years ago. I suppose new things can happen ... even in Oamaru. Must go back for a visit one of these days. I hear they even make whisky there now.

The house there which m'daughter has recently bought looks down on the regular booze bus spot...better than TV I'm told, particularly if someone makes a run for it.

Fuck friendly i reckon tis NZ we are talking of,bad enough in small town NZ no doubt but the bullshit coppers must deal with on a daily basis in the big smoke would be enough to develop an attitude in general i am picking.Tis all very well for mr n mrs Jones to feel a bit pissed off with a coppers attitude but spend a few days/nights in a 111 call center and you may forgive a few of em for being a tad negative.

Understand even if I have not experienced what these fellas do. I suppose if I had been stopped at 2am in the pissing rain in a city centre I would have been more understanding. Ah well. Perhaps I should just lower my expectations for any future interactions :-)

But that goes for any job and there are plenty of other people in jobs they don't like or weren't what they were promised but don't treat it as an excuse to treat joe public rudely.
Police need to look at who they are hiring instead of grabbing every retired sportstar or club rugby player, there's too much emphasis on team players. What they really need is semi pyscotic people who've already experienced a breakdown of some sort who wont crack under pressure.
There's been a culture shift as the police have gradually become militarized that everyone not in a blue uniform is potential enemy.
Used to be always a smile and chit chat at checkpoints and they would even wave the trucks straight through without stopping.
Now its the thousand yard stare of a shell shocked vet ordering you to say name and address instead of hows your day going?
