    OK, Bike is calling it the best, most orgasmic middleweight sport bike of all time?

    Translated by me, it means: It's a very good bike, at least the equal of last year's Japanese offerings, possibly better than some. And there will be a 50/50 chance that at least one of the Japanese factories will do a radical enough update to their 2006 offering (I think Suzuki is about due) to put them well ahead of the Daytona.

    I really wish Bike (and the British motorcycle press) would stop going automatically orgasmic every time Triumph brings out a new model. If anything it hurts the company when the cold hard reviews end up pronouncing the __ (fill in the blank with the latest model) __ merely a very good to excellent motorcycle well worth buying, and not the second coming of Christ like the magazine presented the pre-production model . The hard review ends up making the bike look like a failure.

    Take the review with a block of salt - in the end the Daytona is going to test very well, be written up as the best "real world" bike of the five to live with in the long term, and, in the end will come in holding fifth place out of five, because the other for marques can get around the Streets of Willow .001 second faster.

    And of course that last figure is the most important result to the squids.

    Believe me, I understand the latter. I work for a Honda dealer, and have ridden examples of all five 600 sport bikes over the past two years. Along with the Daytona, the Honda CBR600RR is the most comfortable and liveable bike of the group, capable of doing 100 mile trips with about as much comfort as you're ever going to get out of a sport bike. So what do the kids buy? Suzuki Gixxers, which are torture racks just shy of a Ducati, but they have the fastest times in all the tests. Of course, what would I know about this stuff? I'm only a 55 year old guy who's been riding for 29 years, while 2/3rds of the buyers are in their early to mid 20's and getting their first bike.

    "Comfortable, real world" is the kiss of death in any sport bike review. Which is why most middleweight Daytonas are owner by, er, mature riders.

    pretty mickey. ditch the underseat exhaust and have one mounted on the side with a high bend like a zx-10 and i'd buy one

    That's a bit harsh??? I'm only 26 and would never claim to be "mature"!

    I'm just smart enough to realize that an extra couple of hp ain't going to mean squat to my riding, compared to the advantage the Dayt has in road handling.

    And it looks 10 times better than anything japan can come up with!!!

    Brando did ride a thunderbird...
    McQueen was a very talented rider who rode a lot of triumphs and rode one in the ISDT
    But....

    The Fonz never, ever rode a thunderbird....

    He started with a Knucklehead HD chopper I think (very very cool) and then went to a virtually standard 500cc Triumph Trophy TR5 (second generation alloy engined) This is the one with the close finned engine but still using the TRW short wheelbase rigid frame. The high 2 into one was stock. It would be about a 1952 model I'd guess...

    These bikes spawned a long lived range of Triumphs off road bikes of which my beloved TR6C is one... (although it's a street bike really)

    The 675 looks like my kinda bike - apparently it is skinnier than a 749 Ducati.
    and pisses all over the 636 and 600RR in roll ons in most gears.
    Can't wait to try one when they come out here.Mmmmmmmmmmm

    Yep that's caught my attention. Pity we don't seem to get many demo bikes from Triumph NZ- and why would they bother with this one if it is the little raver Bike mag claims it should sell itself. Latest NZ M/c Trader has a test as well. All sounds promising.

    For the record, Triumph NZ actually provide more demo bikes than any other manufacturer currently selling bikes here. It's up to the dealers to provide demonstrators and untill they start to take Triumph seriously as a franchise, it wont change.

    Suzuki provide the dealers with nothing, nor do Harley. They do offer a rebate on demonstrator stock but then so do Triumph.

    When I worked at the bike shop, Triumph were the only one who sent around a new model when it was released.

    Ah yes.... The Bonneville group ....

    Why am I not really amazed by this....

    From memory.... The original TR5 had the old parallel port 'generator engine' (same as a Triumph GP but softer tune ) and was the first 'Trophy' model. Like everything it was a typical parts bin 'Turner Special' using the existing military TRW (500cc flathead twin) chassis because it had more ground clearance and a shorter wheel base. It was a real clubmans machine with QD lights etc.

    This bike and the GP were unusual because of the alloy barrells and head which were lifted off an auxillary motor/generator that Triumph made for the RAF in WW2 (yes, triumph twins helped win the war). The factory bikes used new castings, big valves etc so the bosses on the barrells are not drilled. Made up bikes (using generator bits) have drilled bosses. Later Triumph replaced these with the all alloy close pitched fin T100 / TR5 engine. In 1953 (I think) the 'C' kit for the T100 (Tiger 100) was the first triumph to have twin carbs from the factory although I think your could order them as a part of the 5T race kit too...

    The TR5 was joined by a TR6 (swing arm models) which started the desert sled dominance of Trophies in american desert racing and all this is just one reason why I think Triumph serious fucked up calling the current Tiger a Tiger and NOT a Trophy!

    ps The last TR5T was the utterly LOVERLY Trophy Trail / Adventurer which was a unit 500cc motor in a modified BSA MX chassis. If you own one I'm very jealous. Always liked em...
