Anyone know of anyone who can split a crank on my 1966 yamaha yds3? It looks ok but I suspect that as it has been sitting around since the early 80's the centre seal will need replacing, which I have.

From memory, the center joint is a male/female spline which should be an easy split.Originally Posted by yowl66
BUT - if it's been sitting that long, there will be pitting on the bearing tracks. Wash, blow dry and turn slowly listening and feeling for the balls "catching". Sometimes you can actually see the pitting under a good light. Personally, I'd get it completely split and have a look at the big end tracks too. Mains are comparatively cheap, I'd put new in as a matter of course.

Hi. Yes you are right it is a male/female splined joint. I have tried to part them but to no avail. Bearings show no signs of wear but I want it split so I can renew any parts necessary. Someone suggested a guy at Panmure motorcycles but cant get an answer from them. Maybe some 'V' blocks will do the trick....

Probably frozen. No one has leapt in with a recommendation and i'm not in Auckland, so, ring a jet ski shop and ask who does their cranks.Alternatively, a Kart shop...wouldn't surprise me if they both say the same place does all of them.

+1 he knows his oats on old stuff. Not sure if he's still working. Minor corrosion will degrade surfaces so they fail shortly after replace or at least totally strip and inspect, then replace brgs and probably pins.
When did they go to laberinth? I should know this shit but they are horizontal split yeah? Air cooled RD forum might be a better starting place.

Thanks guys. Ginger Malloy? Is he still alive. He was racing when my first bike was a tricycle!! Someone suggested a Warren Bridges in west Auckland anybody heard of him? Oh when I said V blocks I meant wedges!!!! You can buy a labrinth seal for these but they need some adaption

Last I'd heard he'd got a bit hurt racing. Last I saw him was at the track like 3-4 years ago with a swag of Bultacos, so very alive then.

Blackwood Yamaha in Cambridge work on old Yamahas. I built a fixture for them just the other day to pess some old Yamaha crank apart. They seem to be able to get the parts.

Otherwise try Mark or John at Boyles in Wellington they have rebuilt loads of Jet Ski cranks & old 2 smoke road bike cranks
