The whole loud pipe thing....
not only a Harley thing...
sometimes you hear some loud fuckin horrible wee shithouse come past....
always annoys me...
The duals on my Harley were pretty average (very quiet for a Harley)
But unfortunately spirited cornering (for a Harley...) had them scraped through to paperthin remnants at undersides.
Got myself a near new python 2 in 1 from TM for a good price ($450)
They look great, are nice and high up, (compared to previous side by side duals )and are only on 1 side.
Cornering has entered a new dimension (for a Harley )...no more exhaust sparkling. ! Yeeha.

Pipes have original damper/baffle....fuck they are loud...(normal...for most Harleys)
felt sorry for neighbours and anybody else with functioning hearing...
slowed me down shitloads, felt to embarrassed to accelerate and make a racket...
Took it for a longish blast up country.....great acceleration!
But the noise drove me mad....earplugs, new well fitting helmet etc....
cant understand how people put up with it....
Bought packing , mesh and wire....put quitened damper back in and .....
Heaven......
peace and quiet again ( for a Harley...)
Why the fuck would you debaffle pipes?
to "save lives".?.......

my bike could stand to be a bit louder, mainly for my own enjoyment but when you set car alarms off as you ride past i think is going a bit far,
i use the horn instead of revving the hell out of my engine (last i checked the horn was cheaper to fix)
some people are just loud and like to be loud even if it is annoying

I've recently gotten back into group rides with club.
There's couple fast guys on one litre bikes that insist on passing everyone at 200k on the straights. Now I'm an alert rider and know their coming at some stage but they always catch me by surprise.
At silly speeds and fast acceleration you don't hear the loud pipe in time to make a difference. Around town might be only place where it makes difference.
Both my bikes have slightly louder pipes for better breathing and light weight but neither is obnoxiously loud.
People have always commented the airbox induction noise is the loudest on the gsxr.

dont need them often, but when I do I want to be heard......

but on a longish ride better to be nice and quiet....
the loud drone in your head is not very pleasant,
can't even hear all of the voices in your head....

made me remember why I dont like group rides that much....
Usualy I am tail end charly....but ended up halfway to go my own way.
only few people I know I like riding with and trust.
I am still alive for a reason...

if we factor in fatigue from noise...
my 250 with standard pipe sat at about 9-11k rpm at 100Km/h (ish) was louder than the wind noise (was great when i first got the bike but got old very fast)
the new bike only makes noise above 8/9k (or wide open throttle) but sits on 5k at 100Km/h so its A LOT less irritating on long rides and still makes noise when being a bit more "enthusiastic"
at 100Km/h i can hear the road noise from the tyres as much as the engine, intake, exhaust and wind

The wind bugs me more. I think a lot of people get away with them because they just rock around town or are point A to point B smaller trip type riders/bikes. Each to their own eh, but to be fair there's not much on full song that I don't mind the sound of

Agree re truely loud pipes, and to be fair the Harley boys and girls tend to lead this bunch, though there are a fair few sports bikes with sweet FA baffling around.

Ironically IMO the HD engine sounds shit with filthy loud pipes, all farking racket and bang crackle pop with a disproportionately rapid forward movement - baffle them so they still sing a deep melody and the engine sounds sweet.

I've a set of Yoshis on mine - with the Yoshi quiet insert in they are, well fairly quiet. I made up a set of inserts that are less restrictive - deep sound but not offensive and it changes as you power through the rev range into a more urgent scream (gets a VTNZ WOF). I like them

Triumph twins sounds good rowdy and should be as such. The new Bonnie stock pipes insult the history of the name.

Triples demand a bit of bark.

Oddly I came across a nice black Ford Ute today that had a 'loud pipes save lives' sticker on it. I did not hear it running .....

But I agree to keep it to a respectable level.
