Yeah, a steady amount, normally they have some story why the got caught "I forgot to turn it on" "It's not mine and I don't know how to use it" "I get so many false warnings and I thought it was another one" "Why didn't it warn me you were there?" " Where did you come from?" "I thought you had to have your radar going all the time" etc etc.

The only other time is if the cop has turned it on to scan someone further down the road before they get to you, and you pick it up.
And how do you know this?
Almost all of the cops I see have their units running all the time.

What exactly do you mean by "running"? What is it that you have seen to give you that impression?

Sure, the machine might have power to it but it may not be emitting any 'tax collecting rays' at the time you saw them.

Yes but then they will start detecting your tachyon emissions and fire their Photon canons at you.

On my recent North island trip the Radar Detector advised me of revenue gatherers 21 times in 4500 km. Most of these times the cop had the radar in standby mode, and he only turned it on when he was sure that he a target vehicle in his sights.

Also, most of these times the radar detector didn't save me from getting a ticket because either I wasn't speeding at the time, or I saw the cop before he turned on his radar, or a combination of the two.

There were two occassions that when the radar detector went off I was above the speed limit, and managed to slow down. This suggests that the cop probably tried to zap me while I was still out of range, or he just being kind and wasn't going to write out a ticket for someone who was only marginally above the limit.

The strangest one though was when a cop was following me and I was sitting at exactly100 kmh. Despite the fact that I wasn't speeding he was very slowly dropping back. Then after he had been following for at least 5 minutes, and had dropped back to around 400 m behind me he gave me a zap on the radar. Shortly after he just pulled up and stopped at the side of the road.

The heaviest concentration of radar equiped revenue gathers was in the Malborough area.

    Ok, time for my 2c,

I've owned a bel for about 5 yrs now (think I brought it off Lou originally) and it's paid for it's self many times over. I will always recommend bel as they seem to be the best value for money, and constantly one of the best performing detectors on the market.
Not only that , but through personal experience their support service is excellent. I had a fault appear on the detector after owning it for about 2 yrs. took it to a dealer (not the own I brought it off as I'd since moved down here, no proof of purchase or anything). within 5 days they came back saying it was a factory fault and replaced it with the brand new model at the time (985). Happy with that

They're not fool proof, nuthin is...... I've still been caught even tho I had the detector.

Correct, cops often don't turn on the radar till they see you..... however, let's not forget the radar needs 3 seconds to lock on and comfirm it's target's speed..... the gathering and processing of the radio waves using the doppler effect isn't instantanious. This means (usually) you've got about 3 secs from the time the detector goes off, till you're shagged...... through experience I've found I can drop about 20kmhs on average, so, if cruising at 140, they may get me at 120 . there are exemptions as always, I've come over a brow and been fucked immediately, another time I was cruising at 140 on the back roads at night. cop came the the other way and flicked his radar on, I locked the brakes up and almost had a heart attack (that would've been my licence again-only 20 points left) he didn't get me and just carried on. Once my heart slowed down I realised I was now doing 80 and had forgotten to dip my lights!:slap:

NB: this experience is in the cage... I need that new bel with the earphone jack for the bike, no doubt I'll have one soon.

Sorry, perhaps that was 10c worth?

    everything is fucked, everybody sucks,
