help me wrought the flamin' govt!

This is second post in two days. This site is better than a can opener dropping from the sky after you've forgotton to take one up the hills with ya!
Here's the brief: I've just come come back from Aussie after being there for three years. I have my full Aussie rider licence (had it for 3 months) and what is essentially my full aussie car licence (P2s, although this one is not really relevant is it?). I come back to NZ and I only have my restricted bike and car. Because I've had my aussie licence for less than two years, the ltsa wont change it over. I can though ride on my full aussie licence for a year after moving back to NZ (yes officer, my name's Aussie Pheel and I leeve in Seedneey ). My problem is though, as I want to buy a 400 and to register it in my name I will have to put my NZ driver licence # on the form (right?). My question is, will I have any problems changing the ownership of the 400 into my name (and my licence) if I am only on my restricted?

There is no (that I know of) law/requirement to have a full NZ Class 6 licence to buy any bike, irrespective of engine size.

A big problem in NZ is unlicenced riders. They still buy bikes from dealers. I have heard of dealers who, although happy to sell bikes to the unlicenced, won't let them test ride.

Insurance?? You'll have to lie if you want cover. Just don't make any claims...

Probably need a lwayer to answer this properly but...

If you are a non NZ resident you get to ride on your license for up to 1 year (I know you know this already). A case was brought up of an indian lady driver who was prosecuted for driving her car on a restricted NZ license, whilst holding a full indian license in her first 12 months in NZ. This was then thrown out and the guidelines to police changed.

Apparently you can drive on a foreign national license for up to one year even if you have a restricted(or learner) NZ license and it is legal to present this (such as those people that can't just take a scratch card test to get a full license like the poms).

I guess if you could prove that you were no longer resident in NZ (just long term visit) you could swing this; but you'd best speak to someone qualified before you try this.

As for the insurance. I gave them my UK license number for insurance on bike and car in my first year here. No problems.

Thanks, yeah well you see as much as I think aussies are a bunch of inbred misfits , I do like a few of the buggers so I will certainly be going back at least once a year for the next few years (i.e at least until I've held my licences there for two years). And I thought to get around the 1 year int. license rule, as I (gulp) have Australian citizenship (it has its uses), I could just "permanently move" back and forth as I have my holidays there, and so always be within a year of "moving here permanently".

My understanding as explained by the post office is you can own any registered vehicle in your own name regardless of whether you hold the appropriate license or not. It is effectively a ID thing.
If you have a NZ drivers licence that must be that license you register against. You can buy and insure a 1000cc bike without any class 6 but your insurance will be invalid if you are the one making the claim and as such most companies won't touch you.

Get caught riding it and you face a different question. That I can't answer.
