    A fun LAMS bike?

    Hello all !
This is my first post here . I'm glad to see the biking community is so friendly and helping !!

I'm at my 30s and just got my learners to be able to ride and own a "fun" bike purely for joy ride and weekend short trips.

My knowledge of bikes are limited but done some research and though Yamaha MT07 could be a good option.

I'm yet to go and test ride it in Upper Hutt.

But I wanted to see what you guys suggest as a fun, reliable, newbie friendly, good looking and sounding bike which I can ride on LAMS but keep it for the years to come ?

The options I considered are :

    Yamaha
    MT03
    MT07
    XJ6nl

    Kawasaki
    Z300 2015
    ER-6n

The most I want to spend on a bike is around $10-11k

    Thanks !

Since you you are going to the Hutt, Clean Motorcyles in Lower Hutt has the Benelli 600 LAMS.....another option for you

From that list, my pick would be the kawasaki 300, but I'd go with the Ninja version.

For LAMS bikes the Kawasaki Z300 or EX300 (same bike with fairings) would probably offer you the most fun due to their size and weight, you can flick them around more easily in the corners, and they still have enough grunt to handle the straights. Cheaper, and good fuel economy as well.

Up to you in the end though, your wallet and aesthetic taste. Go test ride them all and see!

    A fun LAMS bike?

Thanks for the advice guys, I wait for z300 to arrive here and take it for a ride .

And will check out the shop in Hutt. I heard about Benellie but not sure about their quality and reliability . How good are they ?

Is it worth to get a new one or second hand?

For me there is only one option for a long term LAMS bike. That is the NC35. Good luck finding one though!

Otherwise check out the CB(R) 500 it seems to come out on top of most of these leaner bike reviews.

...the new Harley Davidson 500 is now available, costs what you want to spend and bypasses all the later on wishes that will make you want to own a HD...the closet homo HD kickers will be out in a minute or so...but worth the test ride anyway...you may just decide it is the one for you...

I got my learners around the age of 30, having never ridden before. The following assumes you're in the same boat (i.e. no riding experience).

Get something cheap and secondhand. Max $3k.

Not so much 'because you'll drop it' - (I didn't) - but because this motor-bi-cycling thing is one hell of an addiction. And generally speaking there is FAR better value and FAR better bikes in the 'open' market, than just those restricted to LAMS. As soon as you get your full I'm sure you'll be clamouring for something different, if not necessarily faster. Losing a few grand's worth of value on the bike you're buying now is an expensive proposition over an 18 month timeframe.

You also get to tinker more with an old bike. balance the carbs, clean filters, service, adjust stuff. Having a reasonable knowledge of the workings of your bike is important - it may get you home should something break out on the road; or possibly even save you some literal hurt. Warranties are nice, but they're not a complete replacement for knowing how to do something yourself.

The other advantage is you have more money to spend on A) gear, B) training, C) petrol (=experience)

That said, if your disposable income is sufficient, and/or you live by a 'carpe diem' attitude - Either Ninja 300 or MT07 is my pick.

    A fun LAMS bike?

Some great advice there guys ! Thanks heaps
I saw street 500 and thinking to take it for a ride . Although it needs after market exhaust otherwise sounds like a sewing machine ... 500 is a HD but it's not

And I was considering a cheap second hand , not quite sure about it at this stage

You can always see if your local bike shops have had a trade-in from someone. They will generally still offer a warranty after X number of months - bike may be a bit dearer than the private market, but the extra cost is insurance really. I did that with my first bike for peace of mind.
