They ride on the housing which is soft as cheese on an engine that old. I know from experience.
Good luck finding a replacement head (if you need one) in N.Z. The last one the ex got came from Aus, or it might have been Timaru EBay France is a another good source of parts and another French site similar to trade me, can't remember what it's called just now.

did any later model xt6 engines have shells or even better bearings for the cam-if so what year are the better ones to go for...Ive read something about later ones having a better/bigger oil pump and an extra stud in the head but that's as much as I know-youd have thought that for all the technology avail at the time an 85 would of at least used bearing shells at a min

tell us more about the shells-material,half shells, full shells, source of said shells...i'll be looking into this improvement unless srx6 mtrs are already sorted-then i'll just stick with them, not really into modding crap designs but may well have to consider it due to the rarity of xt based engines for sale

can't really tell yer to much about it.....
It was a job though work.. early 80s.... I was given a head, rocker case & cam that had been ground down a set of bearing shells
in a Datsun box.... told to make it all fit.. which i did.... never heard any more about it.. So it must of all worked..

I made a mandal that clamped in the head cam hole to aline it in the lathe .. clamped the head on the tool tower then once alined
removed the mandal and replaced it with a boreing bar..boreing in the chuck instead of the tool post as normal...
