Brake broke!

Anyone struck this before? It's the back brake shoe of my daughter's CT90 (or is it a 110?) 'postie bike'. She wondered why it suddenly started to squeal loudly when using the rear brake so had a wee check and found this. It is a working bike so it does stop a lot but I would not have expected to see this given the light weight and low speed of the bike.

Might be a oncer? If you look at the break(brake!) can you see a flaw or sign of the break happening over a period of time? Or does it look clean snapped like a carrot? I could imagine a postie bike being hard on the brakes, assuming that is what it is used for. Some people are harder on the rear than others too. But good that you found it before it caused a problem.

I used to run some maintenance operations for NZ Post. The postie motorbikes get a very hard time, very much so with brakes. Not many bikes have to stop 300 to 700 times every ride with panniers on.

I want to see the wear on the pad surface. To me that says drum is worn oversized and new shoes only contacting in the middle of the pad surface so more pressure and a levering effect on the shoe to stop.
Could be indicated by only part of the shoe being worn.

Yeah .. I've seen it before on small Hondas ... don't know what the solution is .. after market ones perhaps?

What does the inside of the drum look like? Looking at those latest pix I suspect the drum is probably damaged - either because of, or as the cause of, the damage to the shoes.
