new/old scoot [81 xv750]

well, sunhuntin is back, with an 81 xv750, big sister to my old xv250.

bought this old girl through trademe 3 weeks ago. happy with her so far, despite the need for a new or repaired flywheel. have been browsing threads relating to this and have seen a couple of possible fixes. took her for a service a week after i got her, and she hasnt been home since. the guys are looking for a replacement flywheel and not having much luck so were talking the part being sent to the states for remachining, for a hefty bill of course! so reading kevie's old posts has given me hope of an easier and cheaper option.

her first 20 years were spent in canada, and shes got just over 46,000k on the clock. am picking thats original as the guy i bought her from was in his 80s and hadnt ridden her much.

There may be some leads on the viragotechforum. It is pretty intensive and has sections devoted to each model virago.

What has it done ? When you say flywheel. do you mean alternator rotor ?

What type of machining does it need? not sure why you'd send anything to the states for maching when there's heaps of places in NZ that can do any machining you want

They were a great bike - let down solely by their starter motor design.

grumph, its the flywheel that goes to the starter. has teeth on one side, and the other side is hollow with magnets inside.

kick, im not sure why they want to go that way. im not keen on spending some $2000 to go that route if i can spend less locally. the teeth need building back up, they are sheared off on an angle. all have the same damage right round.

am a member of virago tech, havent had many replies yet though.

For $2k you could quite easily get a whole bike if not more for spare parts; there's one on TM at the moment for $800 & it wasn't that long ago there was another listing for a whole heap of XV750s (probably close to 4 bikes worth) etc for about that coin, complete engines show up every now & then.
There's a multitude of engineering businesses in NZ that are competent enough to refurbish starter motor ring-gear

thanks, TWR. just went and picked up the flywheel and also the gear it mates to. the mechanic who was there thinks the american option is still the best, and i agree it sounds good. but my view is if i can get this one going enough until i know whats happening with this job and give me time to save up some more, then so much the better.

Put up some pics of the parts so we can see what it is that's wrong with it

That damage is normal on those. Yes there are places here in NZ who can build up and recut the teeth. It is also possible to swap to the later 1100 style mechanism. Best bet is to follow up the trademe ads and look for a rotor with a gear in better condition. Ebay is a possibility too.
