Thread: anyone know what to do..

    anyone know what to do..

    Okay COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC.

But has anyone tried nursing a wild bird back to health??

Found a kingfisher on the side of the road the other day just sitting there. Brought it home and yes its still alive this morning.

Have tried feeding it worms, but instead it would rather attack my fingers. (should have expected that)

Mum told me to stick it outside and just let it go, so I tried doing that but it wouldn't even hop out of its box or anything. So I don't exactly want to ditch it out there in the rain to die.

I don't want to kill it either so does anyone have any other suggestions? They'd be appreciated.

I also can't have it sent to the bird recovery centre in Whangarei til Monday, so I did think about doing that.

p.s I must look like a dork trying to save a bird

Theresa yes you can help an injured bird. I used to do it whn I was in South Africa and got quite good at it. (Only 2 out of 7 birds died). But the main thing to remember is if the bird dies, don't fret too much OK!

Firstly, How old does the bird look?
Secondly, Is it injured in anyway?
Thirdly, Where are you keeping it?
    Fourthly,How long have you got?

Most birds when sick or injured go into shock, best thing for it is to leave it in a warm dry place and keep it quiet, it probably wont eat.

Its just a waiting game unfortunately, just check on it periodically.

It will either bounce back or not.

Wrong, thats just a common myth mate. You are forgiven if you believe it though.

Zadok. You can always tell if a bird is young of old by the amount of down on its belly

I know the whole "if it dies it dies" but trying is better than not trying at all Its how my parents brought me up. Then again they also brought up up where you put something out of its misery if its hurting....... hmm..

I'm not sure if its injured, could be internally but then I think it would be dead by now. It flew out of its box and landed on the floor last night and this morning. But it was kind of a "very short" flight. Then it ran around on the floor. So maybe that says its hurt its wings. It looks as though its got its full set of feathers, so I'd be thinking that it should know how to fly by now.

I'm keeping it in our hot water cupboard in a shoe box filled with tissues. Made sure its in the lower part of the cupboard so its still warmish but not over heated.

I've got enough time to look after it at least until I can get it on the courier down to Whangarei. Its just a matter of trying to get it to eat so it don't die before hand.

Ok, so all seems well with it. Sounds like a young un if its taking short bursts of flight but not actually flying into windows and stuff. You proberbly got it after it tried its first flight yesterday and it was plucking (pun intended) up its courage to try again.

Anyway, worry about if the bird needs to drink first. They drink 3x more than they eat so remember that. Can you tell me what sort of Kingfisher it is and I can tell you exactly what you need.

Oh yea: GET IT OUT OF THE HOT WATER CUBOARD! Just put it neatly in the corner of a room (preferably in the dark)

Cat dragged a bird into the house the other day. I was the only one to notice. Feathers all over the hallway and my brother's bedroom. Blood all over the cat's face and neck. Damn bird was still alive too. Got it up and broke it's neck. Was either that or have it live in pain for a few hours then die anyway.

Showed my parrot the results and told him he was next if he kept squaking all day for no damn reason. Hasn't made a peep since.

Our house is absolutely freezing this morning, and I thought it would be the safest place with my cat snooping around..... He's starting to think I've supplied him with dinner..

Theres "beyond help" where yes.. I know to do the right thing.. But then theres times when your able to save a little critter.. Don't feel that this one needs its neck broke.. If you were hinting at that..

Then again I'd probably still have to get someone else to do it..

Nah wasn't hinting at anything, just telling the story.

Never would have thought a cat dumb enough to run head first into a glass door at full speed would be able to catch a bird.

Good luck with your new pet.
