    Trials helmet alternative

I've been hunting rather fruitlessly for a trials helmet. The only ones I have found have been an extortionate price. What I have found is a large selection of Mountain bike helmets at a reasonable price, a bit more to them than the peddlie head sponges available at the WareWhare. Polycarbonate shells, decent peaks, padding and straps in the ones I was looking at. I can't really see much difference in munching the scenery at speed off a mountain bike compared to a slow speed munch off a trials bike. An appropriate alternative?
Just askin in case I'm missing something obvious. I don't intend entering a trial in the near future, non to enter up here. Will get a flat cap should the chance arise.

Summit like THIS. Not the red one, ugh.

Joe Anal from Worksafe came & checked me out a while back, making sure that my helmets for the quad was kosher....basically it came down to wether it had the appropriate rating, not what its original purpose was for.
    Lookz the shizz.......

they would not be legal for MNZ competition, as they do not meet the motorcycles standard (which is the same for Road as it is for offroad) for normal use playing around i guess it would be ok,

Yup, not worried about compliance for competition or road standards. Just between me, the tree, and the helmet. A cheap(ish) alternative for practice. I'm guessing pukka trials helmets are so expensive due to such a small market. I could always go the ag bike helmet route but they ain't that cheap either.
    Cheers for the replies.

the ag bike helmets are a joke to be fair, you would be better off (and cheaper) with a normal cheap jetstar open face,

Had a look at the NZ made FFM Commander?. Its a trails type helmet thats being aimed at farmers who want something better than the next to useless Aghat helmet. About $100 or so l think.

The new Ag hats are good - we've had one on the counter at work for a few weeks, and I see it's gone today...work and safety have been in the area. For trials (in the MNZ book) you only need an ''approved'' helmet, nothing about meeting a standard like other competition helmets...or was back when I had a competition license. I've been using a horse riding helmet (approved) for the last 35 years, no one has approached me about it yet. Before that I used a tweed flat cap.

I just used an MX helmet. They are a bit of a pig in that if you get it wrong you end up huffing & puffing & even though the mouthpiece is 4" away from your face it still restricts breathing which makes no sense.

But it was a good compromise. When I started Trials I was not married, but even now I like my face the way it is so will continue with an MX helmet when I buy another Trials bike. Don't be thinking you can't hurt yourself or won't fall awkwardly.
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.

FFM commander? I'm a medium bonce.. Could this be my lucky day? When you say chips, the ones you get with fish? Or the ones in packets with a Penguin on them? If so, what flavour? If you don't have dreadlocks and the helmet has not been tested, PM me. Can put $$$ into your bank ac and courier you the chups.

That's the highest question mark count I have ever had in one post.

RE the MX lid. I get where your coming from but the one I have is visually restrictive and bloody hot, I notice the weight quickly, too. A little lid for falling off in my boulderless garden would be fine. I think.

Nothing has ever been done in Northland. We used to have trials in Rodney area - Helensvile, Koukop, but the refugee Jafa's have moved into the area, getting pushed out by Chinese buyers, and they don't like mooing cows, let alone a quiet trials bike. A friend used to come down from Waipu to ride in Waikato trials, but like me, I think he's given up.

Yup. Getting to an event where I can enter the air cooled class would be an expensive and tiring weekend. I'm still looking for suitable land access locally, beyond my garden, to practice. Some rocks and streams. Plenty of wet clay and tree roots about.
