Mike Hyde, RIP

Mike Hyde, well known in long-distance riding circles for his Twisting Throttle books, which were written with his own unique sense of humour on riding around Australia and the States, as well as adventure and road riding in New Zealand, died peacefully this morning after a short illness.

He was well regarded as the organiser of the annual TT2000 road rally, and had already made arrangements for the 2016 event to go ahead, and thanks to Nicky, Kevin, and Wayne that remains on track.

His funeral will be held in Christchurch this Friday at 2pm.

I loved those Twisting throttle books, and I was amazed at Mike's feats of endurance. His sense of humour had me chortling out loud as I read, and those photos - especially that one of him on the road near Roswell denying the existence of flying saucers and the ones on the around Australia trip illustrating his motorbike PT.

I think he was the Bill Bryson on two wheels, he produced a series of delightful travel experiences mixed with a good belly laugh.

RIP Mike.

Oh Fuck! I met Mike a couple of times when planning a trip around the US on a bike. What a fantastic man, genuine, funny and a pleasure to talk to.

Very sad. I went to several of his talks and have read his books. A real loss.

Most memorable part of his book about touring the USA was describing the lengths he took to make sure he had a spare ignition key safe and secure. Under the locked seat!

Yesterday's funeral for Mike was standing room only in the chapel and included two great sets of photos and movie clips organised by Sophie (who also wrote a fine eulogy).

A moving ceremony with a mix of funny and sad moments.

He'll clearly be missed by many.
