    Yamaha MT-07 or R3

    Hi,

Looking at getting into riding and buying my first motor bike. My experience is minimal, having ridden a few 250s some time ago. Been looking at the Mt-07 and the R3. On my learners and don't want to have to upgrade for sometime which is why I wanted a middle weight bike.
Any help and suggestions on what is better would be great.
    Cheers

No discussion necessary. R3 is yet another underpowered overpriced learners bike that you're guaranteed to be bored of in 3 months. The mt07 is a great machine for less money that's suitable for grown adults.

What few reviews I've read on the R3 seem pretty good, Motorcycle Trader just did a ninja/honda/yamaha 300cc 'shoot out'. The honda had the best mid range torque/power, the yammy was quickest.
The MT-07 apart from being much larger capacity, has gotten excellent reviews. The Lams version is a specific model for Aus/NZ, smaller capacity {not 700cc} and a different ECU plus other modifications, airbox restrictor etc. If you want to keep it a while, really you've answered your own question, a 300 is never going to as good at 2up, or, distance rides.
If it was me in your place? I'd spend the extra 2k.

Not sure about 2up, because that's probably a rider weight issue... but 300s are perfectly fine for long distance rides, they're actually cheaper to run and maintain as well. I've done 1000km/multi-day trips on my ninja, and have not run into any issues.

I have a full license now, and still use my 300 for a 200km daily commute. Hell of a lot cheaper on gas/tires... and cheaper than the restricted higher CC LAMS bikes.

Go test ride some bikes for yourself, bikes are not 'one size fits all'.

Thanks, definitely going to test ride them both. One of the main points raised was the R3 had a visor for wind protection and the MT doesn't. Is this something to think about as hoping to get into doing some multi day / distance rides

You have an apple and an orange there man.

Screen is no problem. You will be able to fit an after market one on easily enough.

Yup lots of options for a screen for the MT-07.

Unless you have a Goldwing I think screens are overrated for wind protection. I reckon you get much smoother air coming over a naked front end - particularly at road legal speeds.

Screens are for cars - harden up mate, it's a bike.

I regard the MT-07 as the best all round LAMS bike just now.

And for the record, I love the screen on my bike. I have it high when on long straights, and drop it when in the twisties.

I totally agree with the idea that clear air is far nicer than turbulence. If you are going to have a screen, make sure it's the right one. And preferably, electronically adjustable.
