Jackie my good lady has complained bitterly for some time now that i am a bastard.....'you bugger off all weekend riding your bike with no thought for me'.
This is true, i am a bastard at times, and i do indeed spend many hours in the saddle.
The solution is of course to bring her along on the rides,however as she has never been on a motorcycle, the first step would be to pillion her and give her a breif taste.
Presently i do not have a left hand pillion footpeg and bracket, and was hoping someone with a gsxr 1000 would possibly lend me one for a couple of days......any takers, there is a six pack of beer in it.

Don't forget to had extra foam to the "pillion pad" secured with red duct tape in the form of an "X" - X marks the spot were she sits so to speak. I'm positive I saw this at the coldkiwi..............................

Sold mate. Come 'round pick it up any time. Although, with her relative lack of experiance pillioning, it may be wise for me to take her for a short blast, just to ease her into the sensation of Gixxer co-piloting.

anyone got any pillion tips ? i like to hang my whole body offf the bike when im by myself but obviously cant do it when the mrs is on the back, do you guys get your pillon's to lean at all? i had mine leaning the other weekend, and it was good at speed, told her to stop it at low speed turns, was hard to whip the zx9 thru a round about with her leaning as well. went out again with her last weekend, and just got her leaning with me, was ok, but a lot of corners i had to put a tad more into to get round

do a search on 'pillion' and you'll find heaps of threads. Generally, while you're riding the bike, allow for extra braking and corners will feel heavier and sluggish compared to solo riding. For the Mrs on the back, she can influence the bike heaps. If she leans into a corner, the bike will lean in fast. If she counter leans a corner, the bike will tend to run more straight instead of turning (cos she's leaning out). Best thing is for neither of you to do anything in corners but relax. If she follows your body position thru corners (which means not getting off the bike!!), then that will make riding a lot more predictable. Just make sure that you mention that whatever she starts doing, to be consistent, like if she wants to lean in, that's fine but do it always, not just now and again, else corners will become random and could catch you off guard.
Also, for heavy braking, say around town etc, it's a good idea for the Mrs to stick her hands on the fuel tank, near your legs if she can reach, to brace herself instead of using you. Just makes riding a bit easier.
And lastly, get some hand signals going. At 100kph, you can't hear shit. The few I have going is a tap on my right shoulder (followed by me repeating it) means to stop asa. A quick tap on the knee to get their attention and a thumbs up means; you ok? They then reply with the thumbs up/down/wavy hand. A crack over the head usually means slow down or stop looking at those other chicks..
Also, make sure she doesn't get on or off until you tell her too, else she might get on/off at the worst time and tip you over

Yeah, there has been a few threads before if you want to do a search.
my 2c worth is - the more comfortable your pillion is, the more likely they will be happy to come along.
Proper fitting helmet, jacket, gloves, riding pants/draggin jeans and boots - its a bit of an investment but worth it in the long run. (you want her to be safe, right?)

Also found a couple tricks.

1) get her to close her eyes around the first few corners it will mean she won't try and do anything preemptive before a corner (bad very bad)(also bad when they see a holden coming the other way and "jump" in the opposite direction now that was a fun experience, she got a bit of a :eyepoke: for that )

2) I have to have the good old back pack with towels cause i am a skinny bastard she was falling off the edge of the pillion seat making things uncomfortable for both of us. Back pack acted as a spacer and it was all good.

I have been a pillion with Rhino for 9 years now. Didn't have too many probs as I had pillioned as a teenager with my cousin. The thing to remember is not to counter-lean but just relax and lean with the bike. Rhino does not like me holding onto him so I had to learn to just relax and put my hands on my knees. This is natural for me now.

Also obey the riders instruction in an emergency. We had this situation soming back from a ride up to Cape Reinga. A four wheel drive coming the other way came round the corner on our side of the road - Paul had to take evasive action meant going into the shit single on the side of the road. Rhino called out to me to keep really still while he tried to control the bike and get us back on track. I was a bit scared but it taught me a really good lesson. A few years later I was pillioning with a friend back from the Cambridge - Hamilton Cancer Ride and there had been a fatal on SH1 and were diverted onto a gravel road. It was shitty and there was dust and traffic everywhere. I could see my friend was nervous and so I just stayed really still and let her control the bike. We got to Mercer and she was shaking. She kept saying I was a brilliant pillion as I just sat there and did not wobble around so she felt more settled.

Keep your eyes out too as sometimes you can help with rider out with spotting potential dangers.

Go with the flow and trust the rider and you will really enjoy it!!! The other thing is you can enjoy the scenery and freedom without having to concentrate too much.
