Took it to Boyles to have a listen. A few suggestions - possible cam end play or clutch basket springs. I found a YouTube of clutch basket rattle which sounded pretty much the same. Pulled the clutch out and all 6 springs in the basket are loose. Used the basket out of the spare engine (only two loose springs) and it sounds a lot better. Either way I'm more relaxed about the noise and taking it South next week. I noted the original basket (82) and the other (83) have different ID (K1 and K2) cast in and the 82 item has three heavy and three light springs - the 83 has six heavy springs so at sometime in the Suzuki timeline a problem has been recognised and changes made. I can get a Falicon rebuild kit - springs rivets and spacers - but it is too close to departure time to entertain that thought. As long as I get another 1000kms before it shits itself I'll be happy.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.
