which way is the best way from akld-wgn?
    akld-ngaruwahia-otorohanaga-taumaraunui-ohakune-waiouru-bulls-foxton-wgtn?
really just want to know the fastest, quietest roads, not interested in the scenery.
also where do people think are the problem cop areas?

The shortest distance is Taumarunui-National Park-Raetihi-Wanganui-etc

If you want to get your average speed up off the main highway and avoid Joe Law for a hundred or so km, go Waiouru-Taihape-Vinegar Hill-Feilding-Awahuri-Opiki-Shannon-etc

If you get to Hunterville you've gone too far!! It's well signposted -- can't remember its SH designation but it's the Cheltenham-Feilding road. A few windys to start (superb!) and then some nice flat-out straights to finish. You'll need a map to figure out the cross-country bit to Shannon. Again, good flat out riding roads that miss out Palmerston North.

    Quickest way is

Down to Ngarawhaia, turn thru to go to Pirongia, keep going until you hit Otarahunga, blast down National Park, cut across at Ohakune to Waiouru and then down to Sanson etc etc etc.

Believe me - I have driven the Wellington - Auckland - Wellington route heaps of times and this is BY FAR the quickest and most direct route.

DON'T go thru the Para Paras to Wanganui as this is a slow piece of shit road and you will get caught behind someone doing 50.....

A couple of things to watch for -- the road surface on the zigzags at the Turangi end of the Desert Road is shocking -- I suspect the large trucks have caused all the hotmix to get rolled into corrugations. Also there's roadworks just north of Waiouru and a washout on the esses about halfway between Waiouru and Taihape. Roadworks again just south of Utiku and between the Marton turnoff and Bulls. But, apart from that, you're home free!

And finally always remember to keep to the speed limit through road works and towns as the Central boys are really keen on collecting the road toll.

One more thing are you wanting to get to Wgtn quickly or comfortably, quickly is straight down SH1 from Waiouru with lots of straight sections, comfortable is via Feilding (VInegar Hill), Shannon, Wellington.

Too true. The Taihape cop is known as "Cash Register".
